Similar problem here, 10 Mb Afrihost line (normally get about 7.5Mbps out of it), currently getting about 4Mbps, but high latency (250ms+)

Download: 3.28Mbps
Upload: 0.48Mbps
Ping: 295ms

Area is Moreleta Park.

I assume that is a local server?

Local latency should be around 30ms

Speed should be:

1mb line speed should be approx 100KB
2mb ......................................200KB
4mb ......................................400KB
10mb.....................................1000KB

and so on...

Download Speed: 4.11 Mb/s
Upload Speed: 0.37 Mb/s
Latency: 333 ms

Afrihost. Jhb, Bedfordview

Normally I get 10-17ms ping

High local latency points to a congested exchange.

Log a fault with Telkom.

now it's worse:

I don't think it's congestion because I've had a consistent ping which never went higher that 50ms for almost a year now. This is the first time I've seen high latency on this line.

With all the line speed upgrades it's very possible that it's suddenly cropped up.

If it's only certain times of the day, I would say congestion.

If it's all the time, it could be a line issue.

Logging into your router and looking at your SNR and Attenuation stats can tell you a lot about the health of your line.
