Hello all.

I have a AMD athlonXP 2600+ with 1gb of RAM being used as a general things like downloads, browsing, office apps etc. The problem is the machine is crawling it takes forever to boot and load apps. The computer used to run muuuuuch better than this. Is there anything I can do to make it run any better without formatting? I would hate to try backup all that data:) I use system mechanic5 to cleanup, reg clean, defrag etc but it still seems to run like a dog.
Any one got any suggestions to speed it up?

Nope, only thing that will really speed it up would be to format. Dont use programs like Mechanic because more often than not, they cause your pc to stop working altogerher and you end up formatting anyway.

I was reading in this forum about a guy who striped his hard-drives (RAID 0) and there was a major performance boost Quote: "windows would just pop up".

Of course you would have to get an extra harddrive, raid controller (or mayb e built-in already?) and have to re-install.

BUT, its something to remember for your next machine :)

What i'd do is backup everything, and when you format, create one partition where you can install windows and most of your apps, and another where you keep all your files and stuff. That way, when you want to format again, you only have to format the one partition and there's very little backups that need to be done.

those arent bad system specs for running windows, much better than my PC (2100+,old core, and 512mb) and mine runs windows fine.

But I take care of my PC and have tweaked windows out to the max and really keep very little running on windows. I have 17 processes when no apps are running and I have AV and seperate firewall, those take up 3 processes.

But I dont think thast a problem for you, I havent formatted in years, weird that your PC is soo bad, maby some kind of problem there, virus or something. Or maby windows is kinda crap and slows down over time..

Remember to back up, you dont want your drive failing and then spending R3000 on some guy to recover it, if it is recoverable.

On to your problem:
1. How full is your hard drive?

2. Have your run a deep scandisk on your drive?

3. Have your run a few antispyware apps like Ad-Aware, Spybot and Microsoft Defender?

well it doesnt matter what you do if windows has been running for a long time it starts to slow down

just do a fresh install meaning you dont have to back up everything
u just need to reload all your programs

you can do a reinstall over yuor existing install - did this and it works quiet well. Also make sure you defrag properly - I used Diskeeper to do this (triall version is fine) -amkes quiet a diff
