Perhaps an odd question, but would the speed of the information differ by distance from base station?

What are you asking?

Yes, distance can come into play, especially if you are a fair distance. A few hundred metres won't, but a few km's will. Strength of signal isn't as good. Think of a cell phone call where the signal is poor. Never very good. Now imagine you are listening for specific patterns, if there is a lot of noise it is difficult to hear the pattern, so they either have to re transmit, or lengthen the period of the pattern, in laymans terms. (This is not how 3G works, but should give you an idea). So far away means it requires more effort to get the message across, but up close, where it is clear, means easier and quicker to get the message across.

Which of the following is lesser in speed vs. Distance.
Meaning if one had to look at a graph you would have 3G running at 384kb and dropping to about 100 at a distance of 18km away from the Base station.
Where u would maybe have Edge running at 180kb however tapers down slightly to 120 as it runs at a lower frequency at the same distance.

so.... EDGE or 3g???
