Have to renew my driver's license next week and decided it might be a good idea to check if I have any fines against my name...

Well, big surprise I have 3! :wtf:
All for speeding of course - R125, R500 and R1250! :wtf:

The photos on the fines are very poor quality - 2 of the fines have photos showing the back of the car, the other is a wide shot (very blurry) - on all the license plate is visible if zoomed in on.
On none of the photos can you see the occupants of the car, not to mention me, the driver at all.

There is also a Court Case with no fine stated, no summons printed or any date given for a hearing. The photo again, was taken from the back of the car and no occupants visible.

What makes a fine legal and payable - and what makes fines "illegal"?

I'll most likely pay the fines, but the question needs to be asked again.

They don't stop you getting your drivers, or your vehicle license if you have fines.

The only thing that really bothers me are roadblocks...

As long as your car is the only car in the photos and the number plate is correct, then the fines are valid. You should at least be able to see the number plate clearly, but I do think that a better quality photo is stored on their systems. Also, I do not think it is a requirement to be able to see the occupants of the vehicle as I am sure the vehicle wasn't driving itself. So if you weren't in the car then you should provide the details of the person that was in control of the vehicle at that time. Else, you will have to cough up. But I might be wrong, not an expert on our laws, or lack thereof.

IMO a fine needs to be paid when a cop hands you some kind of fine/summons or if it gets delivered to you by registered mail and you sign for it.

Spoke with my Heavy (Brother-in-law) - it's a case of wait-and-see in January.

He did advise me to pay the small fines and check the status of the bigger fine and the court case in January to decide 'what to do next'.
Paying the smaller fines keeps me from being 'an offender that doesn't pay his fines' - and looks better on record.

Lekker surprise for Christmas...
