A speeding train ran over pilgrims crossing railroad tracks in eastern India, killing at least 20 people, and an angry mob beat up the driver after the accident early Monday, officials said.

The pilgrims were crossing the rail tracks at the station in Dhamara Ghat, a small town in Bihar state, when they were struck by the Rajya Rani Express train, said Dinesh Chandra Yadav, a local member of parliament. Several other people were injured.

Monday was the last day of monthlong prayer ceremonies at the Katyayani temple near Dhamara Ghat and the pilgrims were returning from offering morning prayers.

Angry mobs pulled out the train driver and beat him up.

Yadav said the driver died, but Arunendra Kumar, a top railway official, said the driver was in hospital in a critical condition.

The agitated mob then got all the passengers out of the train and set some coaches on fire. Groups of young men also smashed the window panes of two other trains that were in the station.

O look a train let's cross the tracks, doubt that speeding train can do much harm, then when some of us die we will pull out the driver and beat him to death.

India works differently to other countries, no doubt the driver would of know that there will be pilgrims around that area, my guess he was running late,

That must've been quite a sight. 20 people walking right next to each other struck one by one like ten pin bowling.

Hopefully they cross tracks now in a single file.

I wonder if any CCTV footage will surface? Liveleak seems to enjoy publishing videos like that.

I was about to say 20 isn't so many if you see how many of them there are on the train!!
The driver probably didn't even see them...
