Hello,

If i open an Axxess Lite 10GB account, with my 4mb/s line (hopefully 10mb/s soon :D ) will i recieve the same speeds as i have now?

Average of 440 - 500 kb/s download.

because speed is line dependent right? or am i missing something...

440 - 500 kbs is exceptionally slow. 440 - 500 KBS is too high to be credible. Something wrong with your data.

what? sorry that doesnt make any sense to me

what he says is that your line speed doesn't make sense, if you are talking about 440-500 kBITps then your speed is way too slow (like mine at the moment) but 440-500 kBYTEps would exceed your realistic line capacity and is therefore not credible.

I use Telkom & Axxess Lite and speeds are the same today - 3.4Mbs down, 0.41Mbs up - it's normally close with Telkom having the slightly better performance.

Mind you speedtest.net is bit stuffed at the moment as it thinks I'm in Durban but they are working on my exchange so maybe I get the free upgrade soon :D

so are you guys saying that my download speed is too slow for my line?

when i donwload it says:

speed: 452kb/s (im not sure about the unit of measurement but w/e IS THAT SLOW OR NORMAL FOR A 4MB LINE? )

I think you mean 452kB/s (and yes, the capital B *does* make a difference). I normally get between 435 and 441 kB/s on my 4Mb/s line. On a 4Mb/s line, 500kB/s is about the theoretical limit, but there is overhead involved, so the speed you are getting is quite good.

1 Byte (B) = 8 bits (b) ....

On the other hand, if you are getting 452kb/s on a 4Mb/s line then you definitely have a problem.

ohh ok thanks for such a good answer.

If i get bumped up to 10MB i should theoratically reach speeds or about 850kB/s?

Theoretically you should get 1280KB/s but there is an overhead with TCP packets and your average DSL connection has an efficiency of 85% so 1088KB/s is Possible but unlikely as there are other users to take into account.
Interesting read here: http://pflog.net/dsl_overhead/

Usually using a stop bit when working out max line speeds will take into account all overheads and efficiency etc. So 4096/9=455.1 KBpsis your max possible speed.
