Speedtest : Fast then slowly slow down

Why would a speedtest do this?

I click and it jumps to 17mbps then drops to stabilize at 2-3mbps- and then spits out an average of around 4mbps. I'm on a 20mbps line

ISP? Type of account? Have you tried different Speedtest servers?

EDIT: My Vox account used to do this on the MyBroadband speedtest, a few seconds in throughput would just die and then take forever to finish.

A lot of data accounts exhibit that pattern so that is not an issue in itself. ..but that sounds like something is wrong

Ive got a theory that this pattern is connected to shaping. A short burst will let you surf but not do much beyond that.

Throttling/shaping is most likely the cause if this is a phenomenon for all of your internet access. What are speeds like for non-speedtest applications?

im supposed to be on a 10mb but as you say my speed just dropped all down to 1mb i cant do much faster than that. im in the southern suburbs of cpt.
