Sorry I am a noob as far as this is concerned but has anybody noticed the big difference in the ping results of the JHB testing site.
I usually get a ping of about 180ms on Speedtest.net and directly thereafter about 90ms on Pingtest.net. Both are hosted at the same centre.
What has happened to the 60ms results is used to get until May of last year using Speedtest.net on the Vodacom network?
Why have they never recover from the net crash at that time?
When are we supposed to the migrated to the 7.2 data service?

The differences between speed and ping is because, with www.speedtest.net, your ping is based on how long a web site request takes to return.

www.pingtest.net uses the true ICMP protocol, via JAVA to test your ping.

Also, a web site request has a load of overhead (compared to ICMP), whereas a ICMP packet is very small and handled at a very low level in the IP protocol stack.

As for the other stuff...don't know.

Hi,

Anyone know the ip address for vodacom pingtest server in pretoria?

Firewall is blocking pingtest, and I need to open it up.

Cheers,
Murray

So logon to the web interface and change the icmp rule so that either allows icmp or logs it.

There are rules in the firewall supposedly allowing ICMP.

I can ping from command prompt, but pingtest fails unless there is a firewall rule allowing a specific ip address (or ip range)

Anyway, I just thought I should try use pretoria (hosted by Vodacom) since my ISP uses Vodacom as their upstream provider... I guess I will have to use jo-burg (hosted by altech technology concepts) for pingtest, since I have the ip address for that server.
