Something seriously wrong with my connection to northcliff. Did the test on isuck right now and got 135kbps (really, that's isdn speed, wtf?)

First my ethernet doesn't work, now these speeds. Oh, and utracestar gave up on me a week ago. I hope it happened in 3 and things will get better from here!

Anybody else having bad speeds or is it just me?

*EDIT* quality of service: 13% <-- what does this mean? and how is it calculated?* *thanks*

That speed test really works better for me on weekends... I just got 709kbps download, 232kps upload, QoS = 59%.

Ya, definately better on weekends when load on network is less, just got -> dl 632 ul 213 qos 81%. Closer to 350 during prime time (7-10pm weeknights).

BTW qos is the variance between fast & slowest speed recorded, so think of it as throughput steadiness.

prime time is 7-10pm weekdays?

Well thats pretty much the best time except for really late at night and on weekends, the really terrible time is 8-6pm weekdays, thats horrible.

think about it ... we moan at stupid speed like 134kb when it's not working

and the rest of the world sits with 2.5gbytes per second

lol, um I dont think anyone in the world is sitting with 2.5GB/s yet.
That is planned in france, might be rolled out already, I doubt many people have it.

Actually speeds arent as high as you would think in the rest of the world, in America 2MB/s and 6MB/s is very common. If Telkom lauches 4mb/s it wont be that far off international norm, for a third world coutry it will be very good. But its the caps and shaping, and pricing in general that kills us.

Roman, do ou mean that you agree with me that working hours during the day are the slowest, or that 7-10pm is the slowest for you? Moist people are off work after 7pm, and thats generally why its faster. Not an Iburst, but more a provider issues I think.

Well you are looking at R600 month connection fee thats still very cheaps against what we are paying for stupid 1mb line

guys it's Gb/s or gigabits per second... not GB/s or gigabytes per second... there is a HUGE difference, the whole SAT3 cable is only 15GB/s (120Gb/s)

I think roman mean 7AM - 1OPM.

What I've found is that it is slightly slower during working hours but I would not call it "horrible" (+_750 to 800kbps), and since I'm at home most the time I have tested it at all the various times and also found that from about 1am onwards it often hits +1,35mbps anyday of the week.

Could just be that I have a good connection to a tower that at present is not overloaded, and also get preference to others further away with weaker signals.

ja, I know, was just holding down shift for some reason.

But that is pretty funny, if we had the same service coming as France, then SAT-3 would support around 45 people, Taking some spare bandwidth into account, its not all for internet.
Imagine how huge France and Europes bandwdith pipes must be.

h, and Mr.H, well your connection is extremely good, I know.ive also tried my Ibrust at a friends house whihc must be almost as close to the tower as you, and their is a big difference compared to my connection, but I seem to take more of a hit during the day, its pretty horribble fore me.

The thing is that my actualy conenction deteriorates during the day, not just speeds. I get around 3-4, a bit of 5 lights during the day, and night time its always 5 lights. Im guesing your always on 5, even during the day. Your connection must just be to strong to even take a drop from 100% even during the day.

Yes thats went its slowest for me as a residentail subscriber i.e. prime time = when most residential subscriber are accessing the network at once.

BTW I agree with you that moist people are off work after 7pm. I'm sure ladies (& men) of the night work till quite a bit later :D

lol, okay so i cant type.

And I dont think the ladies and men of the night demographic represent much of the iburst customer base. What would they use it for?

I realise that is when most people are on at home, but it still seems alot slower for me during work hours, and speeds up after that in your time frame. I thik that is the general feeling with Iburst and IS right? Its not just me.

Yeah I always have all 5 lights nomatter where I place the modem in the house, I guess I'm just lucky, also when I took the modem to a friend's house in Thornton it had full speed and all 5 lights, but there again he was within 1km of the Old Mutual tower.

Yeah, that's the first thing i noticed when I got iburst - the speeds during workhours are terrible.

BTW, my connection seemed to be ALL OF A SUDDEN much better. My pings to iburst have been as follows:
18 Aug - 384avg
19 Aug - 401avg
20 Aug - 136avg <-- guess that makes sundays the best day for iburst.

I didn't do anything, promise. I'm glad it's much better now, but I'm worried I'll go through that downphase again. oh, and utracestar started working. very weird.

Can someone help me...what's the conversion from kb to kB? Did the speedtest this morning and got 32.9kbps (got capped last night [didn't take long once my connection was better])

SAT-3 is one of the biggest datapipes on the planet... you're forgetting about contention ratios... they're probably easily 100:1 on the pipe. (not to mention compression, which is massive)

Granted Europe might not have such big connections, they do have many of them.

Aaah, of course.100:1, thats a bit harsh, but i geuss noones ever going to be using up their whole 2.5gbs.

Could probably push it up like you say.

Are you shure its really one of the biggest on the planet, Im shure there are tons of much bigger ones just coming out of Asia.
