To all,

I have just arrived from the UK, packing a Speedtouch 330 USB modem, I have subscribed to Telkoms DSL service and their ISP service, all goes well, two weeks later and several calls to the support desk, I have my line up and running. The problem is my modem doesn't work. I have hacked the registry changed the VPI and VCI settings to 8,35...still no connection. I have loaded third party PPPoe software...and used the broadband(instead of the dial up connecion that is setup using speedtouch software) connection...nothing?

If anyone can shed some light on this subject please let me know...

Kind regards

Torien :eek:

Speedtouch USB

Hi Torien,

I had the same problem but eventually got it working after much hunting around the net and fiddling around. The trick is to:

1. Remove any PPoe Client software and USB Modem drivers from your machine.

2. Copy the original installation files from your usb modem disk (or download the newest version from Alcatel) onto your hard drive, and replace the contents of the phonebook.ini file with the following:

[Version]
FileVersion=1.2

[Driver]
DriverType=1

[Maximum simultaneous connections]
MaxSimConnections=1

[0001]
FCS=2
Name=ISP number 1
VpiVci_VCI=35
VpiVci_VPI=8
EncapsulationMode=1
PeakUpStreamBitRate=8
PeakDownStreamBitRate=16

Run the installation from the new location using the new phonebook.ini file.

When this is complete and the two green lights are solid, your modem has correctly connected to the exchange.

Now install the PPoe client software that you got from your ISP, and everything should work (hopefully).

eish, i brought that same model back with me. Thought i'd use it when i finally take the plunge from isdn one of these days.
Looks like its not just gonna plug & play.
curses!

i had the same problem (brought mine back from holland). with linux it was even worse getting it running down here. i just bought an ethernet modem instead. anyone interested in buying my speedtouch 330? :D

It runs fine on Vista 32

I downloaded the drivers for vista, it has the option of setting the modem up for pppoe, and you can set the vpi-vci. It connects without any problems. My laptop runs on XP, now this is another story all together. I dont know how to set the modem up in xp, it goes to pppoa automatically. If somebody has found drivers or software that allows you to set this up, PLEASE!!!!!! tell me how.

Hello Bennie, welcome.

The following should help:

The 'important file containing the settings is called Phonebook.ini.

I modified it as follows:

[Version]
FileVersion=3.0

[Driver]
DriverType=0

[ModemSettings]
ModemOption=00000000000000000000000000000000

[Modem.ISDN]
ModemMode=3

[Modem.POTS]
ModemMode=11

[USB]
MaxAltSetting=1
BandWidthAlgo=0
ForcedSelection=0
BMaxDSL=8128

[Maximum simultaneous connections]
MaxSimConnections=1

[0001]
Name=ISP name
PeakDownstreamBitRate=254
EncapsulationMode=3
PeakUpstreamBitRate=26
VpiVci_VPI=8
VpiVci_VCI=35
DataAltSetting=3
MTU=1500
FCS=2

[cks]
cks=37687

In order to modify it, you need to change the file attributes from 'Read Only' to 'Read'. You then have to reapply the 'Read Only' flag. If that is not done, the programme assumes it is corrupt and fails to load.

Thank you for the prompt reply

The edited INI file did the trick, with the pppoe setting. The modem still does not connect. The icon in the system tray does not change to the green colour that it should be. Any suggestions?
