Hey guys,

I found this spider in my garage (I live in Bedfordview) roughly 2 weeks ago.. I'm quite sure that it's a widow (hourglass shape) but I'm not sure if it's black or brown. As far as I know, black widows usually have a red hourglass, and brown widows have an orange one however, black widows can have a dark orange hourglass. I've also read that brown widows will always have some brown on them, and this spider has none.

Either way, black or brown, doesn't really matter. I'm just concerned as to the danger that these pose to my dogs. Anyone have an idea? Also, how do I go about getting rid of them? I've heard that when you get these spiders in your home, you get lots of them!

It's definitely a Black Widow.

Thanks..

Just to clarify tho, are these a danger to my dogs? And if so, how do I get rid of them?

If you are worried, scoop it up in a empty Nescaffe bottle and and release it faraways from home.

I often catch and release rain spiders. Never seen one of these though

From what I've read, when you get widows, you get plenty of them. I've noticed their webs cropping up all over the show. I'm not sure if simply destroying their webs will be sufficient. I also doubt that removing them one by one will be viable. Besides, I'm not going to risk removing these things myself.

I can handle snakes no problem! Heck, I've handled plenty of venomous snakes before (including a black mamba), but I don't do spiders! No. Thanks.

I am with you on this! Perhaps Stevi's advice ^ is best then :p

While on topic of identifying spiders...

Are Brown Recluse spiders particularly aggressive? Or was what I caught the other day something else? I couldn't identify anything similar online.

It was light brown and about 3cm big including legs, I can't remember any other discerning features other than the fangs/face area looked dark reddish. Thin-ish body, not like a rain spider. I decided to catch rather than kill but this thing jumped off the wall at me when I got close  luckily into the bowl I was holding. I nearly died.

It was definitely aggressive (twitched a lot when I got close) and I could tell it could move pretty fast.
