Hi all
This is what I had to do after realising how much bandwidth I use and waste. FIRST OF ALL, this applies to my scenario and maybe it will to yours too. I do web development and maintain some websites which are all hosted on local servers - HETZNER to be exact. Often I need to update online which only uses local bandwidth. My problem is that working online all day takes a considerable amount of bandwidth usage which led to my international bandwidth being used up first. I did not mind the local only bandwidth because thats all I need for work BUT my wife also uses the internet and she needed international.
I did some reasearch on the net (this forum more than anything) and found that many of us are having the same problem. Some are using the IPCOP method while others the Route.... method. Al this was too much for me to setup and quite frankly we only use Apple Mac.
Anyway, this is what I am now doing to solve my problem. I have the Siemens ADSL modem from Telkom and automatically get 3GB a month bandwidth. I bought an additional 1GB (R79) a month.
Now with the two accounts I changed my modem settings to BRIDGE and created a PPPoE dialup on each machine. My wife's machine is set to use only the 3GB account while mine has two dialup connections, one for international and one for local. When I want to "work", I dialup with local and vise versa.
This is the only way I can save my bandwidth and not use 15GB a month on work local only bandwidth.
Maybe this will give some of you ideas as to how you can "split" your bandwidth.
lemme know id you have any other ideas.
Peace out.
