Hi there!

Well, I'm keen to try a recipe or two I've seen about the interwebs but here is the rub, the recipe calls for ham bone. I have no idea where to get ham bone. I doubt I can just waltz in to my butcher and ask for one. Won't they think I'm mad?
Can you offer any suggestions?

My suggestion is to walk into any butcher and ask him for ham bones and see the shock and horror on his face.:D

What my dad used to do… cook a ham and save the bone for soup :)

Try substituting an Eisbein if you can't get a ham bone.

Lol, for sure, at least the next time I do a pork roast I'll have a clue what to do with the leftovers.
But for now, I see some recipes say "cubed ham". I might give that a go rather!

Lol -he already thinks I'm slightly daft. This probably won't enhance his opinion of me....

Honestly, you can buy a complete ham and cook it up in the soup, it works really well. Smoked works better.
Or you can use Fried Beacon,

just please for the love of all that is holy, do not buy "mystery meat" sandwich ham already sliced and try it with that. worst soup ever (yes someone did that)

also your local Butcher will not think you are stupid for asking that. would be better to find a German or Dutch Butchery.

I know there is one of each in Edenvale, and another German Butchery in Boksburg.

Know where the good Meat is , it makes meal time better

Try substituting an Eisbein if you can't get a ham bone.

This. Eisbein works beautifully in a split pea soup. Then you should try to get some good quality bratwurst to put in as well. MrsC made a gorgeous split pea soup a couple of weeks back like this.

Ok, mystery deli meat bad, eisbein good. Got it. Thanks for the input!
I'll head out and forage my local for an Eisbein. It's frigging cold today and I do believe that it is the day for a slow cooked soup.

Weee! I love winter.

Soup sounds like a fine idea today. I'm going to raid the freezer and see whats available.

I hate soup. It's like someone couldn't think of what to cook and just shoved everything they had into the pot :wtf:

And your thoughts regarding stew?

Every time we get a chicken braai pack there are always pieces that are unwanted and get put into the freezer so now I've got a large pot of chicken noodle soup on the go. :)

Finally someone that understands the concept of food, soup is not food !
I am a proud member of the I hate Soup club.

Stew = Soup = Stew :D

These womboddly (thats a word now) instant packet soups are rubbish. A good home made thick and hearty soup warms you from the inside out. Essentially it's a stew, I agree with ShaunSA.

Now. I can do this in a pot, for two hours...or 8 hours in the slow cooker on low, which is too long. Can I shorten that to 5 on high? Would it affect the soup/stew/awesome?

FYI:eek:

Slow cooker on high should be fine.

Cool, I'll go for a slow cooker, on high and check it after 4 hours. Hopefully it'll be done within 5.
It better be...or the Wife Unit will probably be displeased...

Enjoy - I just loaded up the bread machine so we can have a nice warm loaf of bread with our supper.

I was thinking of making a fresh bread too, but meh.

The beginning! How will it end? Flop or Awesome Sauce? Stay tuned.

so how did it come out?

we had the same idea, for last night, so the SO decided to google a proper Texan Chilli recipe.

I don't like beans.
I don't like chick peas.

the Chili had both. It was still amazing. not something that is big here in SA, but trust me this time of the year it warms you up slightly more than a stew or a soup. 9we ad soup for lunch)

There are soups where the person couldn't think of what to cook and shoved everything in the pot and then into a blender. Then there are soups that are actual recipes and taste amazing and heat you right up in the middle of winter. The difference is world's apart. A proper split pea soup takes all day to prepare and cook and it's one of the most satisfying dishes in cold weather.
