I know the normal 5.1 sound cards use various outputs to split front, rear, centre and sub outs.
But, could I use the left and right output from a single output to send bass to one side and treble the other?

I’m using a laptop to drive media to kids tv and, using a 2 channel amp, driving a centre speaker and sub. Each on their own channel.. could I use software to configure the left and right channels as crossover for the speakers??

Set output as mono and send the full range to both speakers, they'll output the frequencies they can and fade off the one's they can't.

Have a look at EQAPO and PEACE. You can configure individual channels however you like.

If its a stereo output they normally carry the full frequency range. If you only want lower frequency you can use a low pass filter to filter out the mid/high frequencies. The opposite for a high pass filter. But I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to achieve.

So here is a caveman representation of the "setup".
Laptop, using standard headphones out port with a 3.5mm cable connected to a small 2 channel amp.
The amp has one center speaker connected to right and small passive sub on left.

What i was asking is can I (using software) crossover the left and right channels to send only, for instance, 100hz and above to center and 100hz or below to sub?

Thanks @riscbroker, i'll check out those recommendations.

@ScottulusMaximus thanks, i think that is how it is setup now. Not too bad currently, but it sounds like the small amp could be helped by some frequency tuning.
