Hi guys,

I am upgrading my internet speed soon and would like to split the traffic equally between users. The main users are my dad, sister and me. I was thinking of getting a 10mb line and the main traffic would be gaming, browsing and streaming. I would like to split/manage the traffic at the router without having to install software splitters on each PC. I was thinking of getting a microtik router but after research I have discovered they don't really make an ADSL router, they make routerboards which split traffic from a source like an ADSL router. Correct me if I am wrong.

So to make my point, what would be the best for me? Going through the effort of setting up a microtik routerbroad or just buying a high end router?

PS. latency is the most important aspect for this set up.

if you have an old computer box (p4 or dualcore will do) with some RAM and two network cards, you can install Kerio Control and prioritize traffic per IP. Kerio control is a "headless" unit, which it just stands between your network and your router.

It runs on Linux and you control it from a web browser from another computer. You see every single bit in and out of your network in real-time.

This :)

Perfect bandwidth management.

Some routers have a Traffic Control functionality...

My old TP Link TD-W8960N does it quite nicely and it was simple to set up.

What MickeyD said, most routers have bandwidth control built in.
If not you could maybe use a modded dd-wrt firmware that would have this added to your router if it is compatible.

Sounds like a plan - who wants to let linux in their house anyway

Mikrotik would be easy. Mikrotik is not adsl router correct but put a adsl modem in bridge mode. Setup PPPOE and say which interface to dial out of. Still need a static route to get to the modem so there is that.

setup dhcp for one network another for what ever else. make bridge from them and then add interfaces want in the bridge.

Setup a queue for priority range and make unlimited and other one something like 1mbps download and 128kbps upload.

Alternatively look for gaming priority firewall rules on Mikrotik forums, copy and paste.

I have set my upload max to 256kbps over wifi and download max to 3mbps. anything on cable gets unlimited.
