Spore DRM

JPFrostFox made a nuisance of himself on the Mass Effect forums as well.

He may think he's fighting the good fight, but he just became an annoyance.

Must have said something somewhere that really got under your skin I guess?

Well, that's ok. Some people are contrary just for the sake of it, I'm usually pretty quiet except regarding things I feel strongly about and DRM happens to be one of them. If you are happy with a company telling you how many times you may use your purchase, on what hardware you may use it and making it worthless should you decide to sell it (well within your legal right) - then more power to you.

The rest of us will continue to discuss the matter and make sure companies know that a majority of us find this unacceptable. Nowhere have I made a 'nuisance' of myself, as I always discuss it in a civil and mature manner and within the proper location should one be designated. I can do so without the need to resort to personal insult or other callow public aspersions, if only other people were considerate enough to do the same hmm? In this case, a moderator was abusing his position and I was unwilling to quietly sit and take it up the rear, my decision to ask questions resulted in action and the irresponsible individual was removed from service.

Also, enjoy the two extra installs and activation revoke tool that the efforts of people willing to take a stand have resulted in, no thanks necessary.

Have a good day.

Just one question - you did a Google and found this thread? :D

The url was sent to me via PM on an separate site. The world really isn't very big anymore; metaphorically speaking of course.

Being bluntly put, did you have some direction you were going or was it just cracking wise for personal enjoyment? From my brief look around this forum it appeared to have some intelligent participants and I'm all for discussion as long as it has some inherent value or meaning.

:)

The methods employed by so-called big business to protect their programs and the such without giving the end-user a chance to create a back-up is just plain wrong, and I don't like it. I have rights too, but they just ignore it.

Yea, EA really shot themselves in the foot this time. Welcome to the forum JPFrostfox , planning on visiting us every now and again?

"Please do not continue to post theses thread or you account may be at risk of banning which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore." - WTF? Unbelievable really,.

Yeah, I pop in on forums that are active and discussing topics of interest. :)

As soon as that edit was made to my post, I knew it was the result of a volunteer moderator (the spelling and poor grammar made it somewhat obvious). You can likely tell from the first line of my post that the quality of moderation there was already a concern, there were many other complaints about it as well ... but they were conveniently and regularly eradicated. Other posts were being editing to say something altogether different than what the original author intended, it was completely unacceptable and out of control.

The primary purpose of my post was to draw attention to the moderating problem more so than the actual DRM (which had, up to that point, pretty much dominated the forum - I had suggested they make a unified thread but I suppose they chose to leave it be). As events would have it, the post started an internet wildfire of bad publicity for EA, it was just as surprising for me as I imagine it was unpleasant for them.

So two birds with one stone, I guess you could say. The moderator responsible for the abuse was dealt with and a whole lot of attention payed to the DRM issue. I'm not a trouble maker, I don't consider myself arrogant, but I will stand up for what I believe is right - whether it be on the internet, face to face or in print. No second thoughts about it, some people can appreciate it... others prefer not to rock the boat for fear of getting a little wet, or maybe they don't know how to swim?

An interesting development has been that some folks have found a way to strip out SecuROM, and using a third party version of the executable along with their legal registration key - still play a valid and fully functioning online game. The real catcher, is that most these people were previously unable to play due to crashes and system freezes all caused by... you guessed it the DRM. The simple key registration did more to deter any piracy than the DRM, which leads one to the obvious conclusion that piracy seems an awful lot like nothing more than a convenient excuse to put in place this DRM for reasons outside of just preventing piracy.

I'm fairly annoyed with EA myself, actually. My other half registered a new account when we received Spore - was the first to play, and didn't noticing it ask whether or not we want to bind the registration key to that account.

Needless to say that Spore won't bind to my account because the key's already been used. Ok, sure, no problem - I wrote a quick "HELP ME!" mail at the EA support desk thing, where I was kindly told - two weeks later - that they flatout refuse to remove the registration key from my other half's account.

So my Galactic Edition of Spore is registered to my other half when my other half isn't exactly much of a gamer.

It's just funny how EA/DRM/whatever makes people that fork out money for their games the victims/criminals/etc.
