Springbok try after pretending to go for kick

Google is failing me.

I recall from some years back that the boks scored a try after the kicker set the ball for a kick at post, however he never indicated that he was going for posts. When the opposing team retreated to under their posts, he tapped the ball and scored in the corner.

Can anyone recall who scored and against what team? A video would be first prize.

I remember actually watching Naas Botha do this for Northern Transvaal against EP at the Boet Erasmus Stadium - many years ago!!!
 
It also happened in as 1998 Super 12 game... Braam van Straaten for the Stormers at Newlands... Can't remember who they were playing 'tho.
 
I actually think it was Hugh Reece-Edwards. Not saying Braam didn't do it too though. Hugh pointed at the posts, and told the ref he wasn't going for them...

I don't know, but I do recall the boks conceding one of those against England and Rob Andrew I seem to recall.

I think hugh reece placed it then tapped it with his foot to andre joubert or someone and he went over.
 
It was henry Honiball or Andre Joubert, or i think Honiball who was kicking and Joubert scoring. Cant remember the opposition.
Also seen the french dude do it for sharks.
 
That sounds so sneaky, but I don't think that should be allowed if the kicking tee is on the field. I'd love to see it.
 
Thanks folks, I seem to also now think it was Rolls Royce that had something to do with that try.

Once the captain or kicker has indicated to the ref that they want to kick for posts, they have to kick for posts. Full Stop.

Up until that time the ball is "live" and the team can do what they want.
 
I remember the Naas Botha one. I remember him placing for the corner in NZL

Not very clued up with rugby rules, but shouldn't it be only the captain's choice? Otherwise any player could indicated that they are taking the kick at goal, since their is no 'designated kicker'.

Reece Edwards did it in a currie cup game against WP in 1994 or 1995
But I am sure there are other players who also did it.
 
If the kicker indicates to the referee the intention to kick at goal, the kicker must kick at goal. Once the kicker has made the intention clear, there can be no change of the intention. The referee may enquire of the kicker as to the intention.

When has he made his intention clear? When he verbally tells the referee, makes a marks on the ground or places the ball on the ground - or when the kicking tea arrives.

Law 21.4 (b) No delay. If a kicker indicates to the referee the intention to kick a penalty kick at goal, the
kick must be taken within one minute from the time the player indicates the intention to
kick at goal. The intention to kick is signalled by the arrival of the kicking tee or sand, or
when the player makes a mark on the ground. The player must complete the kick within one
minute even if the ball rolls over and has to be placed again. If the one minute is exceeded,
the kick is disallowed, a scrum is ordered at the place of the mark and the opponents throw
in the ball. For any other type of kick, the kick must be taken without undue delay.

That should solve the issue if it is allowed or not. As you can clearly see, it is NOT allowed.

Yep, however what happened in these cases is that the ball had not yet been placed, no sand boy was in sight (there were no kicking tees then) and the "kicker" had not yet indicated to the ref that he was going to kick to poles (nor had his captain told the ref).

Hence the ball was still in play and he could take a tap kick and carry on playing.
