This might have been discussed before, but I don't have the energy to search for it again. This weekend my pc started to pop up a spyguard message saying my computer is infected. I have Norton Anti-virus, but downloaded the NIS (15 day trial period). I ran a full system scan, it removed 2 spyware, but even after this I still get the pop-up everytime I log onto the internet. The pop-up is in the right-hand bottom corner (with the start-up icons). I can close it, but it will re-appear in 10-20 seconds

How is it possible that NIS does not remove this piop-up or that this is bypassing NIS? Is there anythign else I can do do secure my connection (before I fork out a lot of money for NIS and ther might be something better). I had to do internet banking over the weekend, but was to scared to log onto my account. :(

All I have left to say is: HELP!!!!!!!!

Adaware Personal - www.lavasoft.com

Also very good app.

I think you have something called Smitfraud.(whatever)
My brother had it.
Brings up what looks like a security popup at the bottom right.

Take a look at this.

The app called smitrem.exe should help.

Is NIS really as good as everybody say? After only two replies I have 5 programs to choose from. Looks like my decision making just got more difficult :D

:) I use Ad-Aware, Spybot and MS Defender (Beta 2) [with Avast's free AV solution]. I keep as far away from NIS as I can - I even removed it from my wife's laptop, replacing the AV with Avast's free offering. Why? It's bloated, and doesn't IMO work as well as the combo I have.

Oh, and I haven't had any spyware pop up successfully on any of the machines I administer in years - that includes spyware installed by games.

Can't be that bad, can it?

Shoot me for asking this, but are you running all three programs on one pc or are these the programs you use on different computers? :o

I heard of guys running a few spyware and virus programs on one pc......with a firewall as well. Any firewall sugestions, or are the programs metioned below spyware and AV programs?

Spyware is like the CAP, it comes in the night.

IMHO there is no way (no matter how many differnt programs you run) to avoid Spyware. As soon as you install a given program (be it World of Warcraft, click me for free pron, or even an operating system like Windows or linux), and you ALLOW this code access to the internet from you lan, then you have got Spyware.

The best you can do is to stop blatent rubbish like Adware & etc. by using a (any) Spyware catcher, and then to restrict internet access from your lan to stuff that you are comfortable with.

In terms of a reasonable firewall, probably the best answer is a dedicated linux server running ipCop or the like. Failing that, for a single PC solution the old tinysoft Personal firewall was great, but I don't belive it runs on XP. For the technically minded try "TDI-based Open Source Personal Firewall" (http://sf.net/projects/tdifw). If still in doubt visit www.grc.com for a LOT of discussion about this topic. As a last thought, I may be cynical, but I would't trust XP's firewall to protect my holiday snaps, nevermind something serious!

Or you could go the "kill a fly with a Buick" approach and run Hitman Pro (note: site is Dutch, but installs a prog in English) and just blitz the grodies on your PC with app after app after app... :D I've resorted to this one only a couple of times on really badly infected machines because:
1. it takes no small amount of time to cycle
2. you need a reasonably good 'net connection for all that downloading!
But you're unlikely to get anything more thorough than this!

Also possibly consider Systems Spyware Interrogator, about which:
System Spyware Interrogator (Tech Edition) is our newest version and is designed specially with technicians who have to deal with spyware on a regular basis, while continuing to deliver the all much-requested functionalities for typical users with a manual removal process. Tech Edition offers new Alternate Directory Scans, File Hash Generation, Intelligent Hijackthis log parser, and a memory process killer.
Once/when you're clean, look into:
SpywareBlaster, about which:
Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet today.
By simply browsing to a web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one of these unwanted fiends!

The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free and secure, without interfering with the "good side" of the web.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

confucious say "man who is too lazy to use search, but can write two paragraphs instead, is talking ***"

hehe, sorry, thought it was too obvious already.
go reread the first sentence of the first post of this thread, it always baffles me because I have seen this scenario mentioned many times on many forums...
e.g. i'm too busy to google for xyz, so i thought i would pop in here and post a whole chapter of war and peace instead.

Ah, gotcha now ..suspected as much, but I'm a paranoid so-and-so. And I agree with you: I find people confused (as in putting effort in here instead of elG'ing for info) about their priorities, too lazy to get up and DO something (for themselves) or flat-out too stupid (to know WHAT they want/need). But for my part I post nicely comprehensive answers not because I'm especially civic-minded (I'm also, at times, known to be a curmudgeonly so-and-so) but because I'm largely treating this site as my own private datamine so when I need something out on the road and I don't have access to my own data store I can elgooG for it here!

LOL, I get where you're coming from, and while it is tedious to frequently answer questions [with the same answer] about what to do about getting rid of pesky malware in Windoze, it does come with the territory when switching over to a broadband connection - simply bcos the longer one stays connected and online, the higher the chances of picking up some nasties along the way...

The solution is likely to flesh out this the MyADSL Internet Security forum a bit, and have a permanent sticky thread on this particular subject of malware removal in Windoze and various other tips that newbies should find essential.

This is one of the reasons why I'm seriously considering in ditching Windows and go over to Linux. There is just too many problems associated with Windows, and as things are, it is no more feasible as an Internet platform.
