Hey all, I have been running sql server 2000 for around two years on one of my servers. Two months back a strange problem occurred. After rebooting the server, sql agent refuses to start automatically. I think it was a security patch that caused the problem. It is now extremely frustrating as I have to keep logging in to manually start agent.

I have googled and tried some options, however nothing working so far:mad:

BTW the company does not want to upgrade to sql server 2005 or 2008, so that not an option.

You should check to see in Services.msc if the agent is set to start up at system start or if it is has been set to manual. I can understand the company not being able to upgrade if they have no cash, but running a 10 year old SQL server is surely not a good idea security wise, even with all the patches applied? Surely the increased security and new features in later versions will make the upgrade worth it, unless the company using some custom written software.

is the agent set to start automatically? also check under the properties of service account in services.msc - what credentials are being used to start the account?

your going to have to upgrade sometime - sql 2000 is not going to be supported forever.
