Hi all. Desperately hoping someone can give advice here. I have 98 Golf 3. Last year some time I took my car to have the shocks replaced. The place called back and said my break pad on the driver side is done. I replaced both break pads.

Bout 3 or 4 months later, I started hearing this squeaking sound coming from the front driver side wheel. Mostly when driving at a slow speed of 60km/h or below and usually after making a 90 degree turn. After a while went to mechanic and the driver side brake pad was totally worn down again and this time the disc was also ruined. Replaced the pads and discs and went to a brake and clutch place to have a look. Not really sure what they did, but they took the thing apart, cleaned it out and greased it up saying something got stuck and didn't pull back after releasing the brake.

Anyway, now it is about 3 or 4 months later and the squeaking sound is back. This time it is not even at slow speeds. When I brake, I also get the screeching sound which indicates that the break pad is done AGAIN!!!! I am getting really frustrated with this because I have probably spent R5000 over the last year and a bit replacing pads, discs and having it looked at. I will now have to spend more money replacing the pads again and probably the discs too.

I am thinking of just replacing the calipers but before I spent money on that when I don't have to, have any of you had this issue before? Did you manage to get it fixed? What was the problem?

If this time your break pad is done again, it's likely your piston in the break caliper is not releasing properly, causing the pad to rub on the disc continuously.. this is what it sounds like the guys were talking about something being stuck..

If the above is true, it's probably best to replace the calipers.. but, if you are in Cape town, take it down to west coast brake and clutch for a check up.. had good service from them in the past..

Squeaking breaks usually means it's time to replace the pads, if you don't it will become a very extensive exercise with skimming the discs etc

I don't think you understand. It doesn't squeak while pressing down on the brake pedal. It squeaks while driving.

Then as above, have the calipers checked, the piston is not retreating back to its original position. Again if you don't get it checked it will become a more costly exercise to repair
