Here is a quick drive report of the Mahindra Alturas G4.
Exterior:
The Mahindra Alturas G4 is nothing but a rebadged SsangYong G4 Rexton (or second-generation Rexton). So, apart from the badging, grille and wheels, both cars look pretty much the same. With cuts and creases all over the body, we did not find the Alturas G4 good looking.
I remember how I had hated the Toyota Fortuner when I saw it in pictures. But, when I had it for a few days, it grew on me and eventually I fell in love with its design.
This was not the case with the Alturas G4 though.
Front-end has a Mahindra-specific grille with vertical slats and lots of chrome. There is a thick chrome strip on top of the grille which appears to merge into the headlamps clusters.
A 360-degree camera is provided on the 4X4 AT variant. The front unit is housed on the thick black portion below the Mahindra badge.
While LED DRLs are standard, while HID projector headlamps (for the low beam only) are provided on the 4X4 AT variant. The high beam is a halogen unit.
Bumper houses a split air dam, black scuff plate, LED fog-lamps (with cornering lamps) and a couple of parking sensors. Notice the long and thin chrome inserts.
Rear-end is a not as aggressive as the front. Tail-lamps are LED units (except the reversing lamp and turn indicator). No foglamps have been provided. The ones above the bumper are dummy units.
Use of chrome is restricted to the badging, a thick strip above the number-plate housing and a couple of thin strips on the bumper. A reverse camera is housed above the number-plate. T
he bumper houses a honeycomb mesh grille like the air dam at the front, four parking sensors, a towing point and a black scuff plate.
Notice how the words Alturas G4 are mentioned in large letters on the tailgate. It's quite a stupid name - Alturas.
How many car names can you think of that end with an "s"? Sounds like a plural. Should have been Mahindra Altura. What is Alturas?
The Alturas G4 feels sturdy and build quality is at par with the Fortuner. While all the car's doors are heavy, the bonnet is light. The paint quality and fit-and-finish are also good. Shutlines are tight and uniform, except at the top of the tailgate.
Puddle lamps and cameras are located under the ORVMs. Body coloured door handles have chrome inserts and small LED lights on the inner side. The large side steps are from Mahindra Genuine Accessories though. All four wheel wells have a felt-like cladding.
The third row windows are tiny and can cause the occupants to feel claustrophobic.
Measuring 4,850 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,845 mm in height (including roof rails), the Alturas G4 is massive in size. It is the widest car in its class, and second only to the Endeavour in length. It also has the longest wheelbase (2,865 mm) in its class.
Like other vehicles in its class, it has a body-on-frame construction and runs on 18" alloy wheels shod with 255/60 section tyres. This is a proper SUV and not a crossover. It has immense road presence and turns quite a few of heads, particularly in suburban and rural areas.

While the doors open wide, getting into the front is not an easy job. The Alturas G4's floor is quite high. The interior has a black and brown dual-tone theme. The dashboard has leather, faux wood and silver inserts.
The steering wheel is leather wrapped with contrast stitching and has contours for your thumb along with rake and reach adjustment. Feels nice to hold. The center fascia houses an 8" touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control system, cigarette lighter, USB and Aux-in ports and a 12V power outlet with a plastic cover.
The quality of the material used feels as good as the Toyota Fortuner's, if not better. While there are soft touch materials as well as hard plastics, everything you are likely to see or touch is well-finished and feels durable.
Ergonomically too, the cabin is well laid out. The driver sits high and has a commanding frontal view.
The Alturas G4 is equipped with a lot of nice features like ventilated seats, driver's seat with memory function, auto headlamps, keyless entry & go, auto wipers, cruise control, smart powered tailgate and 9 airbags.
What is disappointing is that Mahindra has missed providing an auto-dimming IRVM and electrical adjustment for the steering wheel.
Other features include ambient lighting on the dashboard and scuff plates, footwell lights, LED cabin lamps for each row of seats and sunglass holder.

Ssangyong has upgraded the power output of the Rexton as part of an update that also included a number of styling changes and the introduction of a new eight-speed gearbox.
The Korean firm’s rugged seven-seat SUV retains a 2.2-litre diesel engine, but its maximum output has been raised from 178bhp to 199bhp and its torque increased from 310lb ft to 324lb ft.
Ssangyong says the system is tuned to deliver strong low-end torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 11.9sec.
The revised engine is twinned with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, produced by Hyundai Transys, which Ssangyong claims reduces weight and vibrations while improving efficiency.
The Rexton retains a selectable four-wheel drive system that includes high and low-ratio modes and off-road settings.

Should I buy one?
It’s difficult to work the Rexton out. On one level it’s a countryside dweller’s best friend, but on the other it’s priced closer than you’d expect to more refined equivalents, its remarkable bulk makes it tricky to negotiate tight rural lanes, and although its many concessions to modernity and – dare I say it – luxury are very welcome at this price point, they do rather confuse its positioning.
But of the few old-school, full-sized SUVs that remain on sale, discounting pick-ups, the Rexton is appealing in no small degree courtesy of its cavernous interior and impressive drivability. At the risk of courting controversy, I would suggest to those bemoaning the upmarket reinvention of cars like the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class that this is the capable, capacious, few-frills, 4x4 family tank you’ve been crying out for. Have at it.

Report: Korean EV firm buys Ssangyong for £187 million
Korean media reports Edison Motors' takeover of struggling Ssangyong has been approved by court
Troubled Korean SUV manufacturer Ssangyong has reportedly been acquired by youthful EV company Edison Motors for the equivalent of just £187 million.
The widely reported acquisition comes after a long period of financial trouble for Ssangyong. Majority shareholder Mahindra & Mahindra had been seeking to sell its 75% stake since June 2020, having cancelled all further investment two months prior to that.
Details of Edison's interest went public in October last year, when it was primed – as part of a consortium – to take control of Ssangyong for 280bn won (£170m).
The acquisition has now been approved by Korea's bankruptcy court, according to the Korean Economic Daily newspaper (KED), and is now subject to Edison's payment of an outstanding £169m and agreement from more than two-thirds of Ssangyong's creditors.
The KED reports that the final sum will give Edison's consortium a 95% stake in Ssangyong.
Ssangyong has yet to publicly acknowledge the reports, and no UK spokesman was immediately available for comment.
Edison will reportedly outline its transformation plan for Ssangyong by 1 March.
Indian manufacturing giant Mahindra & Mahindra saved Ssangyong from bankruptcy in 2011, but slow global sales have limited the return on its investment.
