A new SsangYong has been annnounced.

SsangYong Torres is coming to Europe as an electric 4x4

SsangYong has unveiled its latest 4x4 model - Torres. The car fills the gap between the Korando and Rexton models making it the second largest 4x4 in the lineup. That makes it about the size of VW ID.4 or the Skoda Enyaq but as all SsangYong models it is designed for full time off-roading unlike its competitors.

This South Korean equivalent of Land Rover prides itself in off-road abilities for all of its models but neither the design nor equipment levels are comparable, unfortunately. Despite that the company has released some very capable vehicles over the years and built up a reputation of solid and dependable automaker.

The car in the pictures is the European version that will only be available as an EV, it will be built on the same platform as its smaller sibling, Korando. The two will share a 188hp (130 kW) electric powertrain and 61.5 kWh battery that gives the smaller car 210 miles (338 km) of driving range. Since the Torres is much larger we can expect the range to be quite a bit lower.

KG Group takes over SsangYong, will focus on EVs to return to profit

It’s been a rough ride for SsangYong over the last couple of years. The company ran out of funds all the way back in 2020 when its then-backer Mahindra & Mahindra stopped investing money into the company and focused on searching for a buyer.

On December 22, 2020, the company was granted insolvency protection over unpaid loans of $54 million. The company was given 3 months to restructure and reach an agreement with its investors, the Indian automotive giant Mahindra & Mahindra. M&M owned 75% of SsangYong and in April 2020 canceled the promised $406 million investment into the company and started looking for a buyer instead and as a result forced SsangYong into insolvency.

The company managed to secure a bridging loan to buy enough time to find a buyer and began negotiations with Edison Motors. The deal never came to pass, but thankfully KG Group stepped in and the deal to purchase 58.85% of the company was closed at $253 million.

With new management in place, all loans repaid and insolvency protection lifted, the company announced it is going to focus now on transition to an all-electric vehicle portfolio. The newly launched Torres SUV is at the moment available with a gas-powered engine in Korea, but in Europe it was launched as an electric-only option.

SsangYong teases the outdoorsy, all-electric Torres EVX SUV

Korean automaker SsangYong announced its big ICE Torres SUV back in June last year and it's now confirmed its EV counterpart will be revealed during this year's Seoul Mobility Show on March 30. It's named Torrex EVX and features a slightly different design.

For instance, the front fascia adopts more streamlined and simple strip headlights with dotted LEDs between them. The grille has been revamped too, which was to be expected as EVs don't need airflow to cool the engine. The side profile is the same, but we don't get to see the rear of the car.

Instead of the centered infotainment screen, SsangYong went for a dual screen spanning across the dashboard. The console in the middle is also different, but the steering wheel seems to be unchanged.

Ssangyong confirms rebrand to KG Mobility

New ownership ends long period of uncertainty for Korean manufacturer; plans to shed ‘painful image’

Ssangyong Motor Company has confirmed it will rebrand as KG Mobility under its new owner, the KG Group.

The change was today approved by shareholders, having been announced by new chairman Kwak Jea-sun on 4 January.

He was quoted by the Korea Herald as saying: “The name Ssangyong Motor has a fandom with good memories, but it also has a painful image. From now, all Ssangyong cars will come out to the world under the name of KG.”

The Korean manufacturer was purchased by KG for 950 billion won (£620 million) in August 2022, ending nearly two years of uncertainty.

Ssangyong had filed for receivership – volunteering for a dramatic restructuring overseen by the Korean courts – in December 2020, after previous owner Mahindra withdrew all investment, having failed to turn the business around in a decade under its wing.

It was almost purchased for £187m by Edison Motors, a nascent Korean company producing electric buses and commercial vehicles, but the deal fell through after Edison failed to meet a payment deadline in March 2022.

The changes don't affect the forthcoming launch of the Ssangyong Torres EV, the firm's second electric car.

KG Torres EVX goes official with 500km range and €35,000 price tag

SsangYong was recently rebranded to KG Mobility and the company is looking for a fresh start. Its debt restructuring has been completed and with the new all-electric 4x4 under a new name, KG Mobility wants to impress customers with capable 4x4 vehicles at affordable prices.

The Torres EVX is not the first or only electric car sold by KG Mobility. That title goes to Korando e-Motion designed by the SsangYong team. The Torres EVX though is a brand new vehicle based on a brand new platform and as such represents a new, fresh start for the company.

At 4.7 meters in length, the Torres EVX is almost identical in size to Tesla Model Y but it is 10 cm taller. This isn’t a crossover, this is a rugged 4x4 meant to be driven off-road just as its predecessors did.

The drivetrain is quite interesting, Torres EVX is powered by a single electric motor with 150 kW peak output (200 hp), and the power comes from a 73.4 kWh LFP battery pack supplied by BYD. The new platform supports front, rear, and all-wheel drive powertrains. KG Mobility claims the Torres EVX can cover 500 km on a single charge but the company added that in reality, that range is more likely to be 420 km.

Electric Ssangyong Torres EVX set for launch with 310-mile range

Korean SUV maker reveals technical details of new EV, which will rival the Skoda Enyaq iV from next year

KG Mobility – formerly known as Ssangyong – has revealed technical details of its new Torres EV-X electric SUV as it prepares to take pre-orders in its native Korea.

The Torres EV-X, the name of which derives from a combination of ‘electric vehicle’ and ‘extreme’, is powered by a 73.4kWh battery and a front-mounted 201bhp electric motor.

According to KG, range stands at around 310 miles based on WLTP testing. Tests conducted by the Korean government, meanwhile, suggest a range of around 260 miles on a single charge.

The Torres is due to reach UK shores later this year as a rival to the likes of the Skoda Enyaq iV and Toyota bZ4X. Just two specification levels will be available, named E5 and E7.

In E5 specification, the car is fitted with a heat pump, 18in wheels, LED headlights, electric mirrors, a roof rack and automatic wipers. Inside, it features a 12.3in digital instrument display, dual-zone climate control, electric seats, an electric tailgate and a 12.3in infotainment touchscreen with sat-nav.

E7 trim adds upgraded leather seats, keyless entry, rear heated seats and a more rugged exterior design.

KG Mobility unveils Torres EVX

KG Mobility, once known by the less snazzy title of SsangYong Motor, has rolled out its first electric offering, the Torres EVX. And for those of you raising an eyebrow, wondering, "Who?", KG Mobility has more history in its rearview mirror than most realize.

One glance at the Torres EVX and it's evident that KG Mobility has taken its electrification journey seriously. Beyond the obvious green credentials, the sleek lines and horizontal LED daytime running lamps showcase a design ethos that isn't just about sustainability; it's about class. Electric just got a little bit more elegant.

What makes the Torres EVX not just another block on the EV grid? For starters, the vehicle boasts an impressive 17.5 cm (around 6.9 inches for those who think in inches) minimum ride height, making it suitable for the rugged adventurer. Off-road excursions, anyone?

Under the hood – or wherever they hide these things in EVs – the Torres EVX is powered by a 73.4-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery, courtesy of BYD. This isn't your average battery; it comes with enhanced safety, a generous energy density, and, most importantly, a longer lifespan. In everyday practical terms, you can expect to travel over 433 km on a single charge.

KGM Torres SUV to launch in the UK imminently

New 4x4 is soon to arrive with ICE and EV powertrains after Ssangyong's change in brand identity

KGM Motors – formerly Ssangyong – will launch its new Torres SUV in the UK imminently, completing its protracted change to new branding.

The five-seat 4x4 will go on sale with combustion and electric powertrains by April, slotting into the Korean brand’s line-up between the Korando and Rexton SUVs.

The ICE Torres receives the 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine from the Korando, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. This makes 161bhp and 207lb ft, sending the Korando from 0-62mph in 10.8sec.

The ICE Torres will initially arrive in front-wheel-drive guise, before four-wheel-drive examples arrive in the summer.

The electric version – dubbed the Torres EVX – gets a more futuristic look, swapping the traditional-looking headlights for an LED light bar.

Ssangyong is no more! Meet KGM Motors, and its new UK line-up

KGM Motors confirms three new BEV models are also on the way, including a pick-up truck and two SUVs

Ssangyong has officially been rebranded as ‘KGM Motors', drawing a line under a carmaker that took the occasional foray into truly eye-melting design.

None of that now, of course. Indeed, the newly-named KGM has revealed more details about its revamped UK line-up, which will begin with the Torres SUV. And no, it won’t cost £50 million like the Liverpool-legend-turned-Chelsea-flop. Rather, we expect it to retail for a much more competitive £30,000 when it does begin production during the first quarter of 2024.

KGM will then follow the Torres with a triumvirate of other BEVs in the second half of 2024: the O100 pick-up truck and the KR10 and F100 SUVs. Yes, we’re bitterly disappointed these cars weren’t called the ‘Alonso’, the ‘Suarez’ and the ‘Gerrard’ too.

Moving swiftly on from the awful football jokes, these models will make use of an all-new platform which KGM has built in unison with BYD. It’s strange to think how far the brand has come since the days of the Rodius, which was so bad it would graduate from ‘Fail of the Century’ to ‘Fail of the Millennium’ - if such a category existed.

This is the Ssangyong - no, wait - KGM Motors Torres, and now it’s electric too

KGM Motors sets out its new stall with the Torres EVX that follows February’s petrol-powered launch

Say hello to the KGM Motors Torres. Again. The brand formerly known as Ssangyong has revealed its fully electric form.

So while looks wise it's a mirror image of the ICE version launched earlier in the year, instead of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine this one gets a 73.4kWh LFP 'blade' battery, coupled to a 3-in-1 motor system and steer by wire gearing set-up. KGM doesn't divulge the 0-62mph sprint time, but does say it's capable of a claimed 287 miles of range from one charge.

There's a fancy space-saving battery built by BYD, and KGM said it's able to top up from 10-80 per cent in less than 40 minutes, supporting up to 300kW charging capacity. It doubles up as a giant power bank too, a la the Ford F-150 Lightning – via a 3-in-1 power conversion module – and, generously, NotSsangyong offers a battery warranty for one million kilometres (or 620,000+ miles in proper money), or 10 years (whichever's first).

So it looks the same as the petrol-powered car - a chunky, beefy 4x4 with a 1.5-tonne towing capacity, LED DRLs, 18in diamond-cut alloys and serious 'your name's not down so you're not getting in' vibes. Inside, NotSsangyong has kept it simple with two trim levels - K30 and K40. There’s a 12.3in dual-screen set-up for the infotainment and driver display supporting all the modern media conveniences. That includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, TomTom navigation, heated seats and a heated steering wheel.
