We were wondering if it was vaporware for a while there, but SSC North America has unveiled the first production model of its 1,750 horsepower, twin-turbo V8 Tuatara hypercar. It's the successor to the Ultimate Aero, the world's fastest car in 2010.

More than a decade in the making, the Tuatara sits at #5 on our list of the world's most powerful cars. If you take the electric Lotus, Rimac and Pininfarina out of the equation, the Tuatara sits behind the Hennessey Venom F5 as the second most powerful combustion-powered production car on the planet. And since Hennessey still hasn't got the F5 built yet, the pride of SSC unveiled today must rank as one of the baddest cars ever built.

Designed to do north of 300 mph (483 km/h), the Tuatara is an ultra-aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of 0.279. SSC says there's nothing slipperier in the highly slippery hypercar segment, but that doesn't mean it's a featureless, teardrop-shaped lump. The overall shape feels quite Ferrari-adjacent to us, although you get the feeling Maranello wouldn't have let this design out the door with the flying buttresses over the rear air intakes, which look a bit tacked on, or the odd little terrier's ear wings on its backside.

This is it: the very first 1,750bhp SSC Tuatara

300mph+ SSC gets Philly debut. And yes Mr Wayne, it does come in black

"Not only does the car boast a class-leading 0.279 drag coefficient,” explains SSC designer Jason Castriota, “but also maintains an identical aero balance from 100mph to well over 300mph.”

That’s right, well over 300mph. It won’t be the first hypercar to crack that benchmark – that honour goes to Bugatti – but this is indeed the very first production SSC Tuatara; a car still very much fixed on eclipsing that once impregnable top speed.

Unveiled at the Philadelphia Auto Show, car number 1 of only 100 Tuataras planned for production is heading to the home of one Larry Caplin. And we can only salute Mr Caplin for his choice of colour, because the SSC looks really rather fetching in this black getup.

waits for the Carwow review - 5 annoying things about this car!
1. The doors are stupid and too small
2. Can't reach the info. system when the seatbelt is applied
3. The colours are bad
4. Can't reach the pedals
5. It's too low and fast

SSC Tuatara Looks And Sounds Lightning Fast

It took SSC nearly 10 years to deliver the first production Tuatara hypercar but now that the first customer has taken delivery, we get our first look and listen to the beast on an empty stretch of road in the US of A.

In the short clip, we get to see and hear the Tuatara at full taps and the 5.9-litre twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8 sounds angry. This is expected considering it pumps out 1,350 hp (1,007 kW) on 91 octane and 1,750 hp (1,305 kW) on E85. That immense power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed paddle-shift transmission that changes gears in fewer than 100 milliseconds.

Watch SSC Tuatara Do 60 To 120 MPH In Just 2.5 Seconds

Now thanks to a new video uploaded by the manufacturer and little story from Top Gear, we can confirm that the 1,750 hp (1,305 kW) hypercar is properly rapid.

During some recent testing, SSC discovered that their hypercar was accelerating from 60 mph (96 km/h) to 120 mph (193 km/h) in just 2.5 seconds.

SSC Tuatara Reaction Sums Up How Savage It Is

Shelby Supercars (SSC) has been teasing us with footage of their Tuatara hypercar and considering it packs 1,750 hp (1,305 kW), we know it is stupidly fast.

While the previous videos we’ve seen involve close-up looks or even acceleration runs, this latest video involves a shotgun passenger who gives us some indication as to how fast it really is.

Certainly sounds incredible and goes like heck.

They made a lot of talk about traction, but they didn't turn any corners. Very American.

Would love to see the Stig take it out.

If you have been keeping up with our content on here, you will know that the American-made SSC Tuatara hypercar is fast, really really fast but we have not seen any comparisons yet, until now.

YouTuber TheStradman recently took delivery of a Bugatti Veyron and then managed to convince owner of SSC, Jerod Shelby, to put the radical Tuatara up against his hypercar.

SSC Tuatara Is The “Worlds Fastest Production Car”

It seems there is a new king of top speed on the horizon as an unofficial report from KPVM-TV in Las Vegas says the mighty SSC Tuatara has set a new record over the weekend.

Officially, the current fastest production car in the world is the Koenigsegg Agera RS which hit 277.9 mph (447 km/h) in 2017 on a stretch of State Route 160 in southern Nevada.

SSC Tuatara Is The Fastest Production Car In The World After Hitting 331 MPH (532 KM/H)

Rumours were swirling last week about a new top speed record for a production car and we can now confirm it has been absolutely smashed.

The SSC Tuatara reached a top speed of 331 mph (532 km/h) on a seven-mile stretch of closed road just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Using a production car on street tyres and running on non-race fuel, SSC averaged a mind-boggling 316.11 mph (508.73 km/h) following two runs in opposite directions, one at 301.07 mph (484.53 km/h) and the other at 331.15 mph (532.93 km/h).

Bugatti who? 508,73 km/h SSC Tuatara is world’s fastest production car!

SSC has reclaimed the title of world’s “fastest production vehicle,” with the 1 305 kW Tuatara registering an average speed of 508,73 km/h.

In September 2019, Bugatti said it had “withdrawn” from the so-called speed wars after it became the first manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier, with a "near-production" prototype of the Chiron clocking 490,484 km/h (albeit only in one direction).

Now, however, US-based SSC has set a new speed record, achieved earlier in October 2020 along an 11 km stretch of State Route 160 outside of Las Vegas near Pahrump, Nevada.

With racing driver Oliver Webb at the wheel, the SSC Tuatara managed an average speed of 508,73 km/h following two consecutive high-speed runs of 484,53 km/h and 532,93 km/h. To claim the record (which was actually previously held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS at 447,19 km/h), the Tuatara was required to run in both directions, clocking its respective speeds within one hour.
