I was wondering if anyone knew how to recover data from damaged SSD's?
I know you can get data back on HDD with platters (old school drives) but wondered if the same was true with SSD's?

ssd'S ARE ELECTRONICS ONLY. sO MAYBE INTERNAL TRACKS OR pc BOARDS ARE CRACKED OR BROKEN. (dAMN CAPS) . An electronic PC expert may help to check but if the electronics are damaged so is the data. HD's are electromechanical so if the platters are not damaged the data may be recoverable.

Damage will defeat an SSD too. That's why I took out my Pany's shock mounted HDD and put in an SSD, I kept the shock mounting - best of both worlds :).

I agree with Penguin there. If the memory chips themselves aren't damaged, data can theoretically be recovered. If some of the chips are damaged, then you're probably screwed by the wear levelling - effectively (as I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong), your memory chips are like a massive RAID 0 array, with your data striped across different chips, so this type of damage is catastrophic.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I am a customer at Intratec Data Recovery and will call them tomorrow and ask if they able to. Just curious really.

Question: just how did it get damaged? Physical, power surge, malicious? I would say if it was power surge/out of spec voltages for whatever reason, you can kiss your data goodbye. More chance if physically damaged through dropping etc. except if the actually memory devices are damaged, where the circuitry can be repaired.

Edit: Soz, just saw you said physical, should have some chance, I reckon. Not sure the data recovery center will be equipped to handle electronic repairs to component level, though.

So I called Intratec today and they say it is possible to recover data from an SSD but chances are less likely for a 100% successful recovery compared to platter based HDD's. They mentioned additional equipment was required which cost a fortune, par for the course no? Apparently it also takes much longer to recover data from SSD drives although I have yet to see the test in action myself. Finally the overall cost to recover a 128GB SSD w/100% successful data intact will set you back ±R10500.00ex VAT compared to around 3500.00ex VAT for regular PC SATA HDD. Crazy but then I guess thats economy of scales in motion... and I will stick with platters for now thanks.

I'll do it for cheaper :D

A sucker is born every day. not that pt barnum ever said that.

The equipment to recover SSD drives costs about R24,000 with the current exchange rate. R10,500 (ex vat nogal) for one recovery is daylight robbery. I personally think that Intratec can't do the job themselves as they don't have the equipment and that they outsource it, then charge you for the outsourced cost and add their own premium. SSD recovery is a complex process though and completely different to normal HDD recovery.

R3,500 ex vat is also fairly steep for normal HDDs. Plus they'll charge you for parts if a donor drive is needed.
