How much slower do you recon?
Also to consider that I am putting a SATA 3 drive on a motherboard that only does SATA 2 (being a 2 year old laptop and all), so it will not run at 6GB/s in any case

The difference will be less, then, probably ~10% in a heavy workload scenario. To put it crudely, asynchronous chips seem to bottleneck the controller under certain conditions due to their timing mechanism.
