Hey,

After much internal debate ive decided to get a 15" macbook pro as my first ever mac. ive looked at the new macbook air and it appears that the SSD gives it the edge, however im concerned about it not being upgradable and it being too "light weight" for me. Ill be using the MBP for work, some photo-editing of large raw files and dabbling in some HD video editing. so i was hoping that you guys can offer some advice on two things;

1. Whats a good quality SSD?
2. What is the going price for SSD's (im thinking either a 256 or 512, but it really depends on price.

Thanks in advance!

~R5000 for 256GB Do you even get a choice with MBP? Thought apple just dictated what you are allowed to get? :p

Sure it's easy to upgrade a MBP to SSD.

I recommend looking at the Intel 320 range - good speeds, great compatibility & reliability figures. They come in 160gb or 300gb - costing ~ R3000 for the 160 and more than R5500 for the 300gb. The sandforce SSD's are also really fast and worth a look. But I would go Intel - they have a 5 year warranty.

Just read the excellent MacBook Air review by Anandtech. Worth reading. I love his reviews, they're so scientific. The new MacBook Airs are fantastic, and their performance is very impressive - beating any Core 2 Duo! However the Quad Core in the MBP, as well as the upgradability to 8gb means it's got serious power for hardcore photo editing.

I would get one of the new 13" Airs.

Can't use a screwdriver?
