Right.

I have been looking into getting a new SSD for myself and I am now doing the necessary research etc. Looking to get at least 128GB drive with a budget of around the R1000 mark.

Unfortunately it seems that I might be missing something basic here:

Both seem to claim ~500 MB read/write speeds at about the same price point... but the one is double the size? Is this simply a premium placed on the M.2 tech?

you need to check the manufacturer website because 99% of the time the 120gb will not be same speed as 240gb and 500gb. the sites selling these drives always state the fastest speed and not the speed specific to the actual size being sold.

Edit: when comparing the same make and model that is. the sizes will have different speeds.

Jip, just got a Z97 board from Wootware and it has a M.2 port. Conventional SSD seems to be the way to go rather... for now at least. Thx for all the info guys.

SSD + RAID must be awesome even though it is so expensive.

Jirre, raid SSD's.

You guys have dosh to blow :D

I'd rather get one of these:

If I was to build myself a new system now I would go with a board that has a M.2 slot and get a fast 128GB M.2 SSD for the OS. I never store data on my OS drive. That's what big hard drives are for :)

I wouldn't bother with only 128Gb. Get a 256+ so you can more easily load some games and apps on there as well.

I must agree.
I found that with my 120gb OCZ Arc 100, I was always skimping on things to store on there.

Much happier with my 500gb which costs only 2x as much as 120gb OCZ.

As a person on a tight budget, I picked up one of these last Thursday:

Very happy with it so far. Boot times went down to about 5 seconds after post. Only has OS/apps/League of Legends on it, but that's all I need it for anyway.

Also have a Transcend of 128GB. Only have my OS on it and everything else on a HDD. Works perfectly. No need for a bigger SSD. Games run flawlessly off HDD, my concern and biggest gain was the load time and response times on Windows. By far the best windows experience I have had till date.

Yeah. I leave a lot of tabs open on my browsers and it was always a pain opening them the first time with the old hard drive. Now the only reason they don't load up instantly is because my internet can't open all the pages at once!
