Hi there.

TLDR. SSD speed is fine on initial boot and after +-30min - 1hr ssd is slow

First my specs

i7-4790k
asus vii ranger
600w FSP 80+ gold psu
RX 560D XFX
Samsung 860 evo 250GB
2TB WD blue HDD
Corsair air540
Windows 10 PRO with latest version as of 2021/04/21
Testing software is AS SSD

I have this weird issue that when I boot my pc SSD is okish with 500-520+MB/s read and 470-480MB/s write but as I use my pc during the day it goes down to 345-350MB/s and even after closing all my apps it still only 345-350MB/s. After a reboot everything back to normal for about 30 min to 1 hour. So what could be the issue this issue? I thought my old samsung 840 evo 120GB was faulty as it was only getting 120MB/s write after a while so the new one is doing better but still why is it dropping speeds. Funny thing is the 4k speeds is 33.66MB/s read and 91.65MB/s when I tested it.

Stuff I tried was

1. install latest chipset and sata drivers.
2. Make sure iwndows is up to date
3. Align my partition. (software did say it's not aligned but did not solve issue)
4. check cpu temps and it's fine under 70C average during normal use.
5. Trim SSD
6. Checked health via Samsung magician and everything is 100%
7. Did secure erase on my 840 evo

I can still test the ssd in another system to see if performance getting worse over time and for now I think I should connect the 840 evo 120GB to another system to see if performance degrades over time but sure it won't.

- Is your BIOS up to date?
- Have you reset to defaults (then customize from there)?
- Is AHCI mode on?
- Have you tried a new Windows install?
- sfc /scannow ?
- Tried a new SATA cable and/or port?
- Checked what else is using the disk while you're benchmarking?

Just guessing from the top of my head. Good luck.

-already up to date
-Yes tried that
-no but would like to avoid that first and see what else I can try
-yes I did SFC /scannow and no errors.
-Yes tried new port and different cable
-yes made sure nothing as far as I know is using the drive.

Write speed is fine but read speed is only fine on initial boot. Also installed my 840 evo on another slot so not a system drive and that is fine even after hours of the pc being on and logged into windows.

the only write cache is the settings in device manager

How hot is the SSD getting? Have you got it next to your GPU or something?
Your system sounds very hot if it's under 70 with "normal use" which I assume to be web browsing and stuff.

If an SSD gets close to thermal limit, it will slow speeds down in order to protect the flash.

Also, Not sure what drive you have as you mention a 860 evo and an 840 evo.
The Evo 840 has a firmware issue which causes this sort of experience which is solved by updating drive firmware:

No man just saying under 70C under normal heat doesn't mean it's getting hot. I know how hot a cpu should run and even 70C under normal use is fine for the cpu if you know what I mena. anything under 70C shouldn't throttle it. and as I said even the firmware issue doesn't explain why my 860 evo is having issues.

I installed the 840 evo as secondary drive and even until now without any reboot is working fine but when I use the 840 evo or 860 evo as os drive it's not fine

Switch off drive indexing in windows, you should also check in task manager or similar software if the drive is busy doing read/writes when you have the pc "idle" as an indicator of background processes. Maybe you got ransomware busy encrypting your drive.

My case is air 540 forgot to mentioned so my ssd is nowhere near my components and should work just fine temps is 28-41C

I checked made sure my SSD is being used as little as possible like almost nothing. Just to let you know I work in IT just don't know everything but also don't think ransomware cause i have multiple protection software running like kaspersky, spybot and malwarebytes. if it's encrypting the drive so what then just reinstall windows.

This is the response I get when our I.T. dept can't resolve an issue.

Yeah yeah ok. But still this is something weird. Also my boot up feels a bit slow and I disabled as many software as I can on startup. Maybe it's some weird windows update
