Hi,

I would like to add an SSD to my rig, for the apparent performance benefits.

However, I am torn between a Vertex 3 and a Vertex 4, they both seem like solid performers. I have read reviews on Tom's Hardware and other places, but still can't decide.

My budget can go up to 2k.

Any suggestions/comments welcome, doesn't have to be OCZ, I just want to get the best value for my money.

I'd rather get a 240gig Agility 3 drive for R2400.

OCZ and Corsair are the most popular brands. I personally would go for a Vertex 4/Agility 4 simply because of the extra 2 year warranty on them.

Warranty isn't everything of course I personally prefer to get longer warranties on things like this. Most if not all SSD's these days will have a 3 year warranty.

Also not sure what size you are looking at getting between 128GB or 256GB, depends what you will be using it for and how much space you require.

You should first look at what space you want to get between 128GB or 256GB.

Then look at the IOP's and speed.

Then look at the brand and warranty.

The cheapest 120GB ones that I would recommend are:

OCZ Vertex 3 120GB - R1,093 [Sold Out]

TEAM S3 T253S3120GMC103, 120GB - R1,134

The cheapest 256GB one that I would recommend is:

OCZ Agility 3 240GB - R1,831 [Sold Out]

Fellas,

Sorry to jump in. May I garner your opinions on a 60GB SSD. Im considering the Intel 330 Series 60GB. I dont need massive space at all. Even 32 GB would be fine, im just looking for a good decent performing SSD.

I have the Vertex 4 256Gb. You wont believe the speed increase you get. Especially if you install 16 Gb RAM and dont have a paging file. Contact Esquire for best prices on Vertex prices.

The Agility 4s are crap. Does no one here read review? The Agility 3. S better than the agility 4.

Get a Vertex 4. There's no reason to get the older model. I don't know about the Agilitys though.

I have the Agility 4 128GB and it gives me the performance boost I expected from a SSD, but like Qwikslver said it isn't near the performance of the Vertex 4, especially when it comes to incompressible data.

@Peon:
Just take note that many sub 120GB SSD's perform quite a bit slower than the ones of 120GB and larger! I can't comment on the smaller SSD's though.

120GB SSd's give you roughly double the read/write speed. Also, with the smaller drives, you WILL run out of space after a while (Windows updates, etc)

See the thing is I need to upgrade an older laptop. DDR2 based laptop. Its used purely for work and with Windows XP as the OS im sure 60GB is fine. Im just unsure if the Intel 60GB SSD is best bet for its class.

I got the vertex 4 256GB (ordered from Rebel Tech) yesterday. You would not believe the awesomeness!!!!! I read a few reviews and the Agility does not seem to be very popular.

I normally find reviews on newegg and amazon fairly useful as it gives me an idea of the reliability, that being said some of those reviews prove that we share the blue planet with many a retard.

From all the forums that I have browsed through, tomshardware, overclock.net, etc ... the top SSDs (also the most expensive) that come highly recommended are the Samsung 830 Series, Intel 520 and above, Crucial, Plextor. But for 120GB a budget of R2000 should be fine even with these brands.

If you go for the Vertex 4, just make sure to keep your firmware up to date. I recall reading that the performance difference between 1.4 and 1.5 was huge.

How about the Corsair Force 3 90GB It's about R1000 at Rectron (if you have a dealer account, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere) And will also give you a bit of space to play around with :)

I Have 2 Vertex 3 120gb and 1 Vertex 4 256gb. I dont see a difference tbh in performance between the two. The Vertex 4 I understand is a rebuilt Vertex 3 with a new controller board. Overall, I love the OCZ Vertex range. Esquire stock them and makes it easy to obtain (For Me).

So I use one Vertex 3 120gb in the wifes PC, and the other 120 in my laptop. the 256gb Vertex 4 is in my gaming rig. I have run a vertex 3 120gb in my Gaming rig before, so thats why I say I do not see a big difference at all. But vs non SSD... its enormous. Its the single best upgrade anyone can do.

I would recommend the 256 Vertex 4 over all the rest tho. Price is good and space is awesome.

Ok, the current front-runner is the OCZ Vertex 4 256Gb! :D

I like the specs, and the prices are not too bad, esp. Esquire's!
