SSD upgrade on MBP?

The SSD goes in the caddy ??

I was under the impression that it isn't a good idea to use the SSD in the optical drive bay? Is this what you mean?

Surely it would be better to use the HDD in the optical bay?

Only the hdd bay is hooked into the sudden motion sensor so you'll lose that safeguard if you put the ssd in there.

The downside on some models is that the SSD is then stuck on a 3 gigabit interface, while the slower hard drive is on the 6 gigabit one.

And on some models they're both 3 gigabit - just checked my older 2009 MBP and that's the case. My 2011 model on the other hand is 6 on both. Easy enough to check first though via System Report.
 
Does Apple say the sudden motion sensor only works on the drive if it is in the main bay?
 
Necromancing apologies aside...

Just ordered a Crucial M500 240GB SSD off Wootware, at R2088.00 all in.

Had a friend bring over an OWC Data-doubler from the UK - which included the toolkit.

Also bought a OWC Optical enclosure off Takealot in the week, with a nice little R50 discount thrown in.

Bought CCC with the education discount today, and just realised that my Seagate Backup Plus that I bought I few months back, comes with a very handy removable SATA interface adapter, which appears as if it will simply slot straight into the Crucial M500!

So think I'm pretty much done and dusted.

1.) Plug in SATA adapter into new SSD;
2.) CCC all off my 500GB onto the 240GB SSD [I'm hoping this will work - but I might be cutting things fine, since I'm already using about 260GB on the HDD. Hopefully CCC will allow me to select all except my 80GB music library. If so - then I'm golden. I will then move the Music library off the HDD, before formatting it, once all is set-up, and then move it back again onto the clean HDD);
3.) Install SSD;
4.) Cross-fingers.
5.) Boot-up to new SSD [Check that all is working - try and 'find' that recovery partition, which I will hope CCC has taken over];
6.) Fire up Trim Enabler - reboot and check trim.
7.) Move Music onto Seagate External -- 5 hours later -- format original HDD;
8.) Copy Music back onto newly-formatted HDD -- 5 hours later -- crack open a beer.

To those who have done this already - I would appreciate some thoughts on whether I've missed something?

**Should I rather move the music off the HDD onto the external Seagate FIRST (possibly along with the other space hogs (iMovies etc.) AND THEN CCC the (significantly smaller, data-wise HDD) over onto the new SSD?

That sounds like a safer plan?

Any suggestions will be welcomed!

I'm not convinced about the need for Trim Enabler on these drives. I don't know if it helps or hinders the drive's built-in trim features.

Thanks. Am beginning to think I will go that route as well - probably safer for when it gets to the CCC part.

Re Trim - fair to say many are similarly conflicted. Did a bit of reading - no definitive answer either. Will spend more time on the Crucial forums to confirm - their Support is also quite quick, might drop them a line.
 
Anyone pop their SSD in the Optibay AND use it as the bootable drive? See some reports saying the MBP tries to put the Optibay to sleep, which causes some issues?

Results have been a bit underwhelming... :(

To be fair - not so much an SSD issue - load-times on my apps have been nothing short of amazing! - but clearly something going on in the background.... Been getting weird Trusted Certificate messages, beach balling periodically - did a disk verify, and permissions etc. are a mess again... The system is clearly doing quite a bit in the background, which is negating any speed improvements...

I still have the original bootable disk as it was - planned on formatting it asap - but sitting with a bit of a catch-22 now. My "issues" might disappear following a disk-repair of the NEW drive AND my formatting the original HDD [I don't say that with any authority - just a hunch that two bootable disks, one being the original, could be the underlying reason]... Conversely - wiping the original OSX will presumably make a "refresh" all the more difficult... I could simply clone the original HDD to an external, and then wipe and see how things go - but given that my 1st clone didn't exactly work flawlessly, I'm a bit nervous...

Any thoughts?
 
Open Activity Monitor and check what processes are chowing CPU cycles. It's probably Spotlight indexing the drives. If it's Spotlight, leave it alone to finish indexing and your Mac should be fine after that.

Thanks for this - never figured Spotlight would re-index a clone. I've unmounted the original bootable (HDD) now - and am running a Verify Permissions test - and will try to Repair them first, either local or in Recovery Mode. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Just finished the Permissions repair.

You were right - mds; mdworker32 and mds_stores are lighting up the CPU Time & % CPU in Activity Monitor.
They jump back and forth though, which is a bit strange - as in, not constantly using CPU, appear to be switching on and off every few seconds... So do I simply wait it out?
 
Just wait it out. The indexing is dependant on how full the drives are. It will do this once -off. All indexing thereafter will be incremental.
 
Was thinking on upgrading ram 4gb to 8gb but I see apple stuck in 2x 2GB chips in my Macbook Pro 2012 model.

sucks! I would have to buy a 8gb chip.

Bit slow this morning - come again? It has 4gb (2x2), so you can upgrade to 8 (2x4) or 16 (2x8)? What's wrong with that?

Was hoping it would have a single 4gb chip and spar slot open :( then I would only need to buy a single 4gb chip.
Basically have to toss the 2x 2gb chips and buy new 8gb chip or 2x 4gb chips or buy 8gb and remove a single 2gb chip.

Oh, okay. Ja - some do run it with different sizes per bay - but most suggest you run them evenly, apparently more stable/better performance or something... So 2x2 ; 2x4 or 2x8 is preferred. Not sure how necessary it is though....
