Hi there,

Quick question...

Is it worth upgrading to an SSD with a Lenovo Yoga (4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, i3 2.3GHZ) when it's struggling with daily tasks like Photoshop and web browsing? The RAM on this thing is built-in and can't be upgraded. That was my first go-to upgrade. All that's left is SSD.

Know the SSD will improve load times but will it help with general lag when running multiple apps/tabs/programs - something I'm assuming only RAM can help with?

Thanks!
Alex

I have an old Acer i3 2.4GHZ laptop with 4GB RAM that I use at home and it had become a dog. I put in an SSD and the difference was remarkable, it outperformed my work i7 laptop which was suffering from having a hard disk. I don't know how resource intensive Photoshop is but i'm still using the i3 for mail and browsing and the boot time is max 30sec, it boots faster than my tablet.

It depends. Sounds like you want to do some heavier workloads with a laptop that's not designed for it. An SSD will make a huge difference to responsiveness but won't make your CPU magically process things quicker.

Get a budget together and look at Flashgear's adds in the classifieds, you can get yourself a very decent machine from him for around R10K. i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 or 512 GB SSD etc etc.

For photoshop you need (/want) a stronger CPU and more RAM than that. Rather go with a new laptop.

If you in the Centurion area , I can borrow you a SSD and you can try it out. I have an external cloner as well to make things quick and easy.

Thanks for the offer but I'm based in Cape Town.

And thanks for the rest of the responses - looks like it's time to start saving up!
