SSH on Vodacom

Hi All

With all the loadshedding and power issues in our area, I am making use of my vodacom mifi device quite a lot.

SSH is a pain. I open a session up and it will happily stay up as long as I am using it. If I leave the session open and do other things, give it 5 minutes and the connection drops giving me the 'broken pipe' error.

What gives? This is highly annoying when you SSH'ed into 5+ servers at a time and it breaks. Even does so in screen.

Any pointers on how to solve it?

I have a number of servers using openvpn. I ssh to the openvpn IP address. If the 3G connections drops, the ssh session is not terminated in most cases (if there is not a lot of buffered data in either direction). When the 3G connection is back, I can continue from where I left off. While a ssh session is open, I've put my laptop to sleep and opened it 30 to 60 minutes later on a different network and once the openvpn connection is established I can continue with the ssh session from where I left off.
