Has anyone of you been to St Helena (the island, NOT St Helena Bay) and is it worth a visit?

I know very little about it other than the link to Napoleon but thought it may be worth checking out.
 
Very windy - dress appropriately. They recently built an international airport - before you could only go there by ship - and the wind was a big challenge in finding an appropriate spot and doing all the test flights. SA Airlink flies there via Windhoek, I think.

St. Helena was also the site of one of the [url"http://sainthelenaisland.info/boerprisoners.htm"]British concentration camps[/url]. I've always wanted to go there since one of my great grandparents were held there. Haven't gotten around to it yet though.

I see Airlink flies there once a week. Not sure if there is enough to keep me busy for 7 days, though.
 
Been there. For flying, wind not so much the issue as low cloud cover being problematic. Stop at Windhoek to check conditions, only get ok to continue or not based upon latest weather reports. Airport has shortest automated baggage belt in the world. Internet extremely expensive, only place besides North Korea that I decided no connectivity for a week. Unbelievably hilly, there was a normal 42km marathon where one guy said he took as long for the Two Oceans as he did on the island. Great place to unwind, esp if you like hiking, etc. Stayed at a B&B where the owner had been present at Ascension Island US base during the moon landing .. interesting stories.

There is a military history themed cruise (or used to be) that heads out there that is on my bucket list. Would love to visit. Other islands I want to go to are Shetland Islands. Greatest concentration of Viking historical sights in the world up there.

Cold, Grey, miserable little island in the middle of the Ocean,

why not fly East to somewhere in the Indian ocean, where its Warm, and tropical,
like Seychelles or Comoros or Mauritius.

I don't think that the type of people looking to visit St Helena are the same ones looking to sunbath on a touristy beach. St Helena for sun never even crossed my mind.
 
I've been for a couple days; it was smaller than I'd thought, and has a population of like 4 000 or something like that. I'd say if you're not familiar with the history of the place and are not big on hiking and are more looking for white sandy beaches then it's not the place for you. So I mean as with any county you want to visit, know what you're getting into else you might be disappointed.
But as an interesting, colourful, remote place to chill, explore, learn, it's great.
You didn't need a visa when I went, as long as you had your passport you were good to go.

agreed, same sort of people who would go on a Polar or Antarctic Cruise, Wouldn't go on a nice Caribbean cruise.

Different strokes for different folks.
