I'm trying to download a big file with my usb hsdpa modem but it's proving a bit difficult. I'm only home for a couple of hours a day so i leave it on when i leave and when i come back i've been disconnected after it only downloaded about 50-100mb of the 2gig file this is quite irritating as i've managed to only donwload 10% in 4 or so days. i've got 4 bar signal and the speed and pings times are great, the stability isn't.

Easily fixed.

Download Firefox (link)
Download FreeDownloadManager 2.1 (link) (Not the new version!)

You'll need a direct link to the file so: Surf to the file with Firefox. Once it starts d/l stop it. Press Ctrl-J if the download window does not show. Right click+Properties on the download and copy the url of the file to the download manager.

Yes to firefox. Yes to FDM.

To this mix add: the FlashGot extension (link). Install it, restart fx, navigate to the download. FlashGot will intercept and ask you if you want to open it (don't), use FDM, or save (natively in firefox). Choose FDM and off you go. No need to stop downloads or copy/paste urls.

I think this will all go smoothly with the flashgot and fdm defaults, but if not they can be set up exactly how you need them. In FDM, look at the traffic usage mode - you can configure bandwidth throttles for high medium and low usage, so your downloads don't disturb your interactive traffic.

@conspirator: what's wrong with the "new version"? Just being "beta"?

Already using mozilla(seamonkey) and a download manager the problem is not starting over the whole time, it's that i'm not at home to look after the connection all the time. I started downloading the file 5 days ago and i've only downloaded 12% of the said 2 gig file.

If you directly connect using the [searchforum]DUN connection[/searchforum] instead of going through VMC, you should be able to set the connection's properties to auto-redial...
