EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Invites “Star Trek Beyond” Fan Creator to Pitch TV Series

TrekMovie has learned that Michael Gummelt, owner of www.StarTrekUncharted.com (formerly www.StarTrekBeyond.com) and creator of the fan concept of the same name has been invited by Paramount to pitch his idea for a new Star Trek television series to the network, an unprecedented opportunity rarely (if ever) afforded to non-industry professionals. The concept, now titled Star Trek Uncharted, has been in the works for 20 years and takes place several decades after the time of Captain Kirk and the original Enterprise.

A fan pitch makes it to the Paramount execs
Many fan creators, writers, artists, and the like dream of one day actually sitting down with a big network and pitching their idea. It’s the first step that’s needed to turn an idea for a show or movie into a reality. But production companies don’t traditionally take unsolicited ideas from its fans or they’d spend all their time reading half-baked treatments, many of which would probably only appeal to a very small fragment of the fan community.

Well, this time it’s different! For some reason, the powers that be have agreed to listen to Michael Gummelt as he pitches his idea for a new Star Trek series, Star Trek Uncharted. Gummelt penned an essay for TrekMovie on why now is the time for Trek to return to TV and why Star Trek Uncharted is the series to do that. He has also extensively detailed the concept on his website, www.StarTrekUncharted.com. TrekMovie got a chance to ask Gummelt about the unique opportunity.

Earlier this year CBS (Paramount Television) made a move to explore viable Star Trek concepts. Those which did pitch didn’t see any interest in CBS pov. CBS turned down Jonathan Frakes (Riker’s) concept. The article related content is nothing new, but it is another chance to have Star Trek return to television, good luck to Michael Gummelt. At least we know that CBS is looking to work with something… the return is real, when is the question?

They should have just carried on with Enterprise, was my favourite after STNG.

I am sure it will not be low budget on the quality side, because CBS are going to want to sell this to overseas markets.
I think they had a look at the figures for CBS Active and realised the Star Trek shows are the big pullers.

TNG made "First Run Syndication" a thing in the USA, and the advantage is that it was not ratings dependent. As long as stations bought it was made. Online viewing is the new First Run Syndication, and will not be reliant on network ratings. This could be a good thing.

The genre is struggling to hit the targets since the late 1990's... Show me one Sci-Fi series in the 2000’s which managed to pull through with the rankings.

Well actually the two most successful series launches this season have been Blindspot and Supergirl, but I agree that SciFi has always worked better on non-typical channels. but with online viewing and time shifting the norm for what is a good rating comes down every year.
CBS Active is an online service so they will know exactly who are watching the classic series with exact viewing numbers.

Biggest issue with Sci Fi series, their biggest fans are also their greatest curse. Piracy probably affects them negatively due to people just downloading them.
