Okay so here's a dilemma. Or at least, something which got me thinking.
I'm going to do a Star Wars marathon. Because, why not?

However, there's two sequences. The original first (i.e. 4-6, 1-3, 7, Rogue one)

Or there's the chronological (Star Wars universe) sequence (i.e. 1-3, Rogue One, 4-7).

I'm thinking of watching it chronologically as at least that way everything will be fresh and in sequence, and I though of course this will likely send the purists into a mild froth.

So, what sequence would you follow?

I did it chronologically and at least it all made sense. The only reason Lucas did it out of order was because the tech of the time had to catch up: no reason that being a purist means you have to watch the movies in that same disjointed fashion.

The Star Wars Saga: Introducing Machete Order

Introducing: Machete Order

How can you ensure that a viewing keeps the Vader reveal a surprise, while introducing young Anakin before the end of Return of the Jedi?

Simple, watch them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI. You may notice Episode I is gone.

Just go read through the page I linked.

Now with Rogue One in the mix I say watch: Rogue One, IV, V, II, III, VI and then VII.

Also for IV, V and VI you have to watch the Despecialized Editions:

Wow that Despecialised edition looks great! Will have to get that somewhere.

Thanks for that info though, I'll do a little reading.

No matter what order you watch you have to watch the Despecialized Editions, I own I-VII on Blu-Ray and if I see that horrible PS2 graphics CGI Jabba and other aliens in IV, V and VII I almost want to turn it off.

I will never watch the original trilogy on the actual Blu-Ray's ever again.

Watch this video from about 4:45 to see what I'm talking about:

Yea I'm convinced man, will have to just acquire them first.

Weren't the blu rays fixed up again from the first specialisation?

Start with Rogue One....and then skip the rest.

The one where Picard and crew travel back in time to stop the Borg from sabotaging the first alien contact is my absolute favorites.i would only watch the ones after that

That's Stat Trek buddy

Check the 1997 specialisation vs later ones, the 1997 ones look like PS2 gfx, the later do look better. But more stuff was added again

I think the Blu-Ray's are based off of the same source as the 2004 DVD release but I'm not 100% sure so don't quote me on that.

Saying it looks better isn't saying much at all.

I don't know if a lot of people know this, Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back is on the National Film Registry's selection of films to be preserved in the Library of Congress, the goal of this is to preserve and archive films that have been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

That is a big deal yet the actual Star Wars films aren't there to be preserved because a requirement is it has to be the original version as seen on release, the version Lucasfilm sent them was the Special Edition.

A Lucasfilm PR representative was contacted by http://originaltrilogy.com/ and said this:

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone, nearly one million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in poor condition.

This is seen by many as the typical thing a PR person would say and translates as Lucas refusing to release the original version in any way shape or form.

Some people would kill you for that typo.

I personally dislike star trek , so had to Google what Star Trek movies there were....and the plot so I could come up with that answer

To be honest, the film's weren't bad back in the day, but the only thing that annoys me about the remaster is Hans and Greedo. Other then that I think Lucas idea is that a film isn't truly finished until he can get his original vision. Oh also the ghosts at the end of Return of the Jedi, that also annoyed me .
The additional little touches expand on the world in my view, the extra x-wings during the attack on the first death star, the extra wampa stuff in Empire also adds.
Yes the Jabba scene with Hans does look heavily CG which it is, but the original 97 cg looked horrible, the 2004 not so bad, in fact I think the SE BR release also has been retouched some more.

This is the Stet Warts thread, not Stat Trek!

I don't mind when modern technology is used to enhance some of the things, what I hate is adding crap CGI just because and adding more crap CGI that then removes original elements.

Take the original cantina scene as an example, how many people worked on designing the aliens, creating the costumes and actors bringing them to life just to replaced by bad looking CGI in the special editions.

I didn't want to bring this up but when is the last time you saw the Jedi Rocks scene, look it up on YouTube and tell me that doesn't make you cringe.

Is that the scene in Jabbas palace? They did the aliens in the cantina in two months and you can see it. Being fixed up isn't a bad thing, I'll have to watch it again to see how bad the cgi is. But the practical effects weren't all good either.
