Hi Guys

I'd like to know what are the requirements to start a school in South Africa.

I would like to start a welding school, and probably expand to pipe fitting and boiler making.
I have already started writing my welding book which could be used as a text book. I have now 15 years experience in the welding industry. I have trained a number of colleagues, who are now good welders themselves.

Most welding schools I know are rip-offs, as many people finish their courses with almost zero welding knowledge.

Anyone knows where to start to get this off the ground?

Staring at schools is generally a very good way to land in a court, especially if you do it with binoculars.

LOL Christ, I wish i could change that so people would actually answer the question .. :D

It is possible to do these things privately. Consider:

http://electricalschool.co.za/
http://plumbingschool.co.za/

Not sure how these got started but they seem to be legit (did some investigation a while ago for a junior acquaintance who was considering trades as a profession).

That being said though, doesn't matter which school you attended, you'd still need to write the national trade tests to be qualified. So it would probably be a good idea to start with the body that administers these tests, not sure what they're called. They would probably need to accredit the school as well.

Start small, use word of mouth to spread your school.

Advertise on social media (whatsapp, twitter etc) but don't spam.

Then there's this :

It's really great to see people doing things for themselves, well done.

Don't worry about not being the best at spellcheck you don't need it to weld.

As far as I am aware most of these types of qualifications are earned through apprenticeships and then trade tests.

That does not mean that there are no opportunities in the market for training centres.

Contact all the welding companies in your area and find out if they are looking for apprentices. If you are able to provide opportunities for employment for your customers it will be a easier to attract new students.

Your services will be of value to companies who will have assurance that the new interns have a basic understanding and aptitude for the job.

It's also a good idea to find someone already successfully doing it and copy the business model. If they are in a different town call them and ask for advice. Entrepreneurs know the struggle involved in starting a new business and are often happy to help, just don't be a pest.
