Starting at the bottom - what courses?

To date my SO's photographic masterpieces has been limited to Motorola, Nokia, BB and mik&druk.

She would like to broaden her porfolio to a Canon or Nikon SLR. Her birthday is coming up and I have been given certain nudges :whistle:

Having no idea what f-stop and AF is, what courses or training (preferably online or distant learning) would you recommend? I may as well join her in enjoying her gift.

Remember - we both know nothing and need to start with 1+1.

Are the free training that you get with some cams worth attending?
 
What I would also suggest is expand your search to consider more than just Canon and Nikon, believe it or not, they ain't the only SLR manufacturer's out there.

I think you get training vouchers with Nikon, not sure on Canon. I don't shoot with either, so maybe a Canikon user can give you more input in this regard.

Does she want to shoot video as well? If so, the new 70D is basically the best choice, otherwise something like the 650D or 700D.
Not a Nikon man so can't help you there.
Who knows, maybe she can even go for a mirrorless camera like the Sony NEX range of cameras. Here's a interesting article of a pro who switched from his pro Nikon to a NEX.

The free training is more about getting you up to speed with how the camera operates and it can save you a lot of time - worth it but not mandatory.

Online resources are great, and generally free, but a general photography course, even a brief one, with a good instructor is better.
 
Ja Nikon offers training when you purchase a camera, and also they have free courses monthly @ their centurion office.

Sounds good -but was leaning towards a Canon bundle and Centurion is my valley :(



Was hoping to do something before purchasing to giude us in some direction or won't this be of any benifit as most of the cams have similar features?
