Hey guys.

Need a bit of advice.
Basically..What is the current best method of getting adsl installed into my apartment?
I see there is a wire running a long the skirting boards so it seems there was a phone line here once upon a time.

I have never had a phone line under my own name and have been using 3g for my internet needs for the past few years.
But i am coming to the point where adsl is the only option for me.

Do i just phone them and tell them to come install?
Is there any advice you guys might have that could save me a few bucks along the way (regarding self install and what not perhaps)?
I am mainly looking for the best (cheepest) current way to get the phone line installed from scratch and then adsl line activated...after that i am golden. (i know in the past you could simply apply for the telskum adsl 3 month trial for instance)

thanks in advance for any tricks that you might be willing to share.

Basically call 10210

Tell them you want ADSL, but have no line. and will NOT be using Telkom as your ISP. If you get a closer plan installation is free.

In a week or two they will come install everything.

Pop a mail to Openweb and let them know you need a Gold account at the speed you want.

Go for the cheapest closer plan, it includes free installation. When the line is in then order and adsl self installation at the line speed you want. They let you know when its active and then you can use the ISP of your choice.
Total installation charge: R0

closer plan heh?
So thats your basic phoneline plan...cool/

thanks again... will go check their site now.

Do i eventually "cancel" this closer plan?...the options seem a bit more expensive than your 135 RONDS people seem to be touting around as the cost of the land line?

You pay like R8 or R15 a month for free landline calls and some other stuff like CLI. So may be worth it to keep it depending on your needs.

Or you could just go for the Simple option which give you a free router, 3g modem + 500 megs data and everythign else mentioned above + an uncapped unshaped 2 meg line for R644 PM.

But then again you might want to follow the advice of the artist formarly known as Qwicksilver and not sign up with TI and leave all that unshaped goodness to us :p

Sorry to piggy back off this thread. Few questions of my own since I've been procrastinating this.

  • I rent for starters. Inside the flat there is prepaid Telkom line that I use. Please tell me about the red tape for getting a post-paid line. What documents do you submit ie ID book, bank statements, payslip? Are there month to month options or 6 month options?
  • Has anyone switched from prepaid to post-paid? Can you tell me what that was like ie do I really have to wait 10 days for someone to come to my house or can they just press fancy things from the call centre?
  • If there are documents to submit would that mean I have to coordinate with my landlord ie will they turn me away for not being an account owner of some sort? I know if I ask her to help me she will drag her feet on this :erm:.
  • And finally - my landlord already has a post-paid line for herself in the main house. Is having two lines on the property an issue?

Sorry in advance for any stupid questions :o but I'm really clueless and at the same time averse to call centre conversations. Going to bump this tomorrow morning for the office crew.

Very off topic, but when you say unshaped, you mean 24/7? How much do you pull per month on your 2meg?

@YingYang - Shhhhhh..... if everyone jumps to Ti then there will be no bandwith left for us LOL

But yeah go with OW Gold, completed unshaped, all the time except between 7am and 5pm ;)

Best bet is to visit a Telkom Direct store and enquire within. Calling the Telkom toll free number is a bit of a lottery.

In the other thread I mentioned I only had my line installed on the 11th so I haven't had a chance to see how much I can pull in a month. At the moment I'm at 150 gigs, but that's because I ran out of stuff to download around a week ago

So I average around 15 - 17 gigs a day and my status is still in the green on the TI site (just about in the middle) :)

I think you will get around +-250GB before any throttling takes effect.
I'm in the the red and have pulled 212GB this month so far and I haven't seen any throttling yet, although I wasn't home this weekend so no downloading took place.
I'm trying to see how much more I can pull so I have an exact figure as to when the throttling starts.

I think 200gigs should be enough for me in a month. Up to now I was like a kid starved of sweets and then suddenly being put in a room where sweets are everywhere :D
