Starting to Cycle - Where to begin?

Where could I get a decent skipping rope?

Any sports store.

I'd start off with a cheap PVC or plastic rope. I'd avoid nylon ropes or leather ropes as those tend to kink and not be easy to work with.

A cheap rope shouldn't cost you more than R50-R60. Once you've got the hang of it you can upgrade.

No matter how ugly they look, cycling pants really makes a major difference. If the look bother you too much, wear something over it. I don't cycle without glasses, both for the sun and to keep dust, wind and bugs out of my eyes.

More like.. if you ever want to have kids or don't wanna feel like pappa het vir jou ge wag.. ;) Uhm if you afraid of scaring ladies & making guys jealous or have little to show.. consider getting padded MTB shorts.. they fairly long and kinda like surfer shorts (slightly shorter/above knee).

Glasses.. i just wear my normal sunglasses but i find that air gets in and this makes a huge difference when hurtling down hills at >60-80km/h. Consider getting even cheapies that fit snugly around socket to keep dust and wind out.. and try and keep your mouth close when going > 45km/h has a bug in the mouth sucks.

What goes up must come down and that hurts!

I started this past week-end with the Voortrekker one.. hectic climb and a nice decent to the finish. :) without practice i managed tocome in the 2/3rds :)

I'd suggest getting a decent second hand bike and a helmet firstly.
As you enjoy cycling more you can get cycling gear such as a shorts, gloves and shoes etc.

As mentioned previously thehubsa is good as well as gumtree for good second hand deals.
I think a lot of bike stores are getting rid of 2014 stock at the moment.

I was in exact same boat as you in May. I was lucky enough that my work gave me a 10k loan interest free to buy a semi decent entry level bike. I got the Silverback Sola 4 which is a great bike for the components that it got on. I have now to date put on 1500km of commuting. I only use it to travel from home to work which is a 30k round trip.

The only thing that I have regretted now is that I didnt buy a road bike. I dont think MB is for me and for the commuting a road bike would suite me better. So my advice now after the year would be to go look at thehub.co.za classifieds and keep an eye out for a good second hand bike that will last you 2 years. In that time you will find out what sort of cyclist you are in the long run.

If you want to just ride after work or weekends or as a fun bike on farm roads. Dont over spend on your first purchase cause if you do like it you will be blowing spare cash pretty quickly.

Start spinning. It's cheaper and you can decide if you like cycling... I have not decided yet. It's been 2 months. I still think bikes are hell horses. :D

... can decide if you like cycling...

Just don't base your like/dislike of cycling on spinning - the two are not the same thing. A spinning bike has a flywheel which makes for a vastly different experience. Also, spinning is pretty much repetitive exercise, whereas cycling can be as interesting, boring, safe or dangerous as you want to make it. I'd much rather get the adrenaline going on a 40 kph descent on a rocky road than pump away on a spinning bike.
