State capture inquiry begins

Where is all this going.

We already have dozens of people implicated in corruption, with perhaps 100s more still to be revealed.

Once the inquiry is done then charges need to be laid.

Based on how things are now it will be years before the first case is in court.

All the crooks will defend themselves with the money they have stolen, delays, missing witnesses, missing defendants, appeals, more appeals.

This will clog up the legal system for years and years if not decades.

I'm doubting we have enough resources, enough will or enough determination. to do what's needed, and the likelihood is this will all die a slow death without a single kingpin ending up behind bars.

If I'm right, then what is the point.

I think the fact that its seeing the light of day and is done openly is a good thing.

everybody knows the ANC will always get re-elected, but at least now,
some of its members have to be clever how they hide their misdeeds,

and who knows, maybe some of them will see the inside of a jail cell.

Public Protector reveals what information she'll share with Zondo commission

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has outlined what information her office will be sharing with the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture.

In a video statement posted to YouTube, Mkhwebane said she was detailing the record her office would be sharing with the commission "so that I can clearly articulate what we have in our possession".

"I'm not doing this to show that possibly I'm reporting to the former Public Protector [Thuli Madonsela], but it's just for the benefit of the public because this matter is of public and national interest, so that the public can know that this is the information we have and we have nothing to hide," she added.

How would one know if she shared ALL the information related to this particular line of enquiry?

I am pretty sure we all want the guilty behind bars etc. but we don't have much choice, do we? We can moan about this till cows come home or we can wait for Zondo commission to finish and see what the recommendations are. Commission got extension till July 2020 so let us say end of 2020 for recommendations.

We all did flip-all during Zupta years except to moan and groan - elephant got fatter and fatter regardless. Now, at least there is a tiny chance, right?
 
The Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture has pressed former president Jacob Zuma to indicate whether he will be appearing before it, either to cross-examine witnesses or to put forward his side of the story.

A letter penned by the acting secretary of the commission, Peter Pedlar, to Zuma's lawyer, Lugisani (Dan) Mantsha, says: "It has become urgent to know whether your client will appear before the commission on the dates given in our letter of April 30, 2019, as we are now about five weeks away from July 15, 2019.

"We therefore request that your client advises us in writing by no later than Wednesday, June 12, 2019, next week whether he will appear before the commission on those dates."

Assume Zuma did not respond and will go to court when subpoenas come.

State Capture inquiry: Zuma has no right to demand questions before taking the stand

The State Capture inquiry says former president Jacob Zuma has no right to insist to be furnished with a list of questions as a condition for him to voluntarily take the stand.

In a statement on Thursday‚ the commission said it had been waiting more than six weeks for Zuma to furnish a written undertaking that he would appear before it.

Now‚ it says it will have make other plans.

"The commission hereby confirms that in April 2019 it set aside 15 to 19 July 2019 as the dates for the appearance before it of [Zuma] in order to enable him to give his side of the story in response to the statements or affidavits and evidence of certain identified witnesses‚" the commission said.

"It is contemplated that [Zuma] would come back and appear before the commission later in the year to give evidence on other issues or matters."

It said that it had been in consultation with Zuma's attorneys since the end of April‚ asking that the former president furnish it with a written undertaking that he will appear before the commission on the given dates.
 
Seems like uBaba will finally grace that commission with his presence.

And this is an excellent opportunity for him to be a hero by spilling the beans on everyone. He has been threatening to do that for quite some time now.
 
Looks like the source close to Zuma either knows something the commission doesn't, or is lying

A tense standoff is unfolding between former president Jacob Zuma and the state capture commission of inquiry, headed by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

It is now increasingly likely that the commission will have to resort to employing its wide ranging powers to compel Zuma to provide an affidavit, or appear before the commission as requested.

Zuma has been asked by the commission - on at least three occasions since April last year - to provide a written undertaking that he will appear before it between July 15 and 19.

The commission also requested that he provide an affidavit by June 12. As of Thursday, he had not done either.

I can imagine uBaba's dilemma, there is no money for all the endless court cases he is used to in order to delay things, looks like there is nowhere to hide.

That is definitely one of the issues...

Also the commission is being "nice" at the moment, and I think he hasn't quite understood that he has no real sway there...
