State capture inquiry begins

I wonder what the eventual outcome of this commission will be. There is just so much to go through. Is anyone keeping track of it and preparing who to start investigating and charging? I know its going to drag out for years to come though.
The npa are keeping track..

:ROFL::ROFL: This is why the ruling party will remain in power. The country is filled with ignorance/naivity. Nothing came of Gupta Leaks. Nothing came of Nkandla. Nothing came of the Waterkloof landing. I can go on. Yet people still somehow believe something will come of this.

Let's hope Willie gets going soon....
we hope he doesn't overreact this time around.

Centurion - Former head of asset forfeiture unit (AFU), Willie Hofmeyr, has admitted that he had overreacted in the Spy Tapes saga when he claimed that criminal charges against former president Jacob Zuma were politically motivated.

Hofmeyr also admitted that the prosecution had a "solid case" against Zuma but said they had listened to the "recorded conversations" between the then National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Bulelani Ngcuka and former Scorpions boss Leonard McCarth arguing over when should criminal charges be preferred against Zuma.

Hopefully some constitutional changes, to create an Integrity Commission, reinstate the Scorpions, guarantee independence of the NPA and Hawks and IPID. Stopping cadre deployment would be nice, but that may never happen. Unfortunately Parliament has its own rules, and self-correction of the ruling party is almost impossible.

Those things would go a long way to healing the country.

The Scorpions achieved a conviction rate of more than 90% and pursued high-profile cases, including the arms deal investigation that led to the conviction of Zuma’s former financial adviser, Durban businessman Schabir Schaik, on fraud and corruption charges.
Then TravelGate happened:

Looking back at who said what and judgements made by them since then ... :crying:

Long before Eskom and the Guptas, there was wholesale corruption around the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and direct capture of elements of law enforcement: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/art...ithin-law-enforcement-agencies-johan-booysen/
Former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen has told the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture that elements within law enforcement, including the NPA, had been captured to protect people in ‘political power’ and who were directly involved in defrauding the state of about R60-million in inflated costs relating to the 2010 Fifa World Cup held in South Africa.

No one will be sent to jail, people will be redeployed elsewhere, lawyers will have made money, papers will be lost, details forgotten, mislaid. These commission are a waste of money and time.

Zondo inquiry to get more lawyers after recess

The commission is expected to hear evidence from Transnet chairperson Popo Molefe and group CEO Tau Morwe early in May.

With over 200 people still to testify and some implicated individuals having applied to cross-examine witnesses, the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture is feeling the pressure of the heavy workload.
This is exacerbated by an inadequate number of lawyers on its staff.
The commission, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, which is in recess until May 2, admitted as much last week.
For the first time since starting the mammoth task of unearthing information from witnesses on the graft, corruption, money laundering and state capture that led to billions being siphoned out of the public purse, the commission has accepted the increase in work volume required more lawyers to be appointed.

Commission spokesperson Mbuyiselo Stemele said: “Some lawyers have recently joined the commission’s legal team. Others have been identified in the recent past, but it was found they had conflicts of interest.

OK, sounds good,...... when can we expect some of these dirty ANC comrades in orange overalls?

Ramaphosa: Those who steal government funds must be 'exposed & jailed'

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa told supporters at a rally in kwaNobuhle, Eastern Cape that those who steal government funds must be exposed and arrested.

Ramaphosa addressed the crowd after officiating at the official Freedom Day celebrations in his capacity as state president in Makhanda earlier.

He joined the party to campaign in kwaNobuhle later in the afternoon.

"At local government... we want those who steal money to be exposed and jailed because corruption is bad. Those who steal money are stealing your money which is supposed to go to service delivery and work for you. So we are saying we want that to end," he said.

Did this idiot ever pay back the millions he stole from VBS with the aid of his family (son)? Apparently they wanted to but the bank cashier was not available. LOL #LiveWithIt

State capture: Booysen claims Madhoe, Pandey prosecution decision was an attack on me'

A memorandum that spelt out a decision that police officer, Colonel Navin Madhoe, and businessman Thoshan Pandey should not be prosecuted was an "attack on me", a former Hawks boss claimed.
The former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss, General Johan Booysen was testifying at the state capture commission of inquiry on Thursday and the memo referred to was from then Director of Public Prosecutions in KZN, advocate Moipone Noko.
"What concerns me the most about the memo is that it is an attack on me. It makes me look like the accused person. I would have at least expected her to give me an opportunity to state my case," Booysen added.
Controversial Umhlanga businessman, Panday, and Colonel Madhoe were charged with corruption for allegedly attempting to bribe Booysen in 2011 with R2m to backdate a report on an investigation into accommodation tenders worth R60m, News24 earlier reported.

Senior prosecutors lied under oath - Johan Booysen

PRETORIA - Former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen has accused senior prosecutors of lying under oath and conspiring to ensure he was prosecuted and removed from the Hawks.
The major general has testified at the state capture commission of inquiry about his fight over several years to return to office.
Booysen was leading high profile investigations into politically connected businessman Thoshen Panday and corrupt senior police officers.
He said prosecutor Sello Maema drafted the memorandum to support the second decision to authorise racketeering charges against him.

Former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Johan Booysen has told the state capture commission of inquiry that "all hell broke loose" when Berning Ntlemeza was appointed as the head of the crime-fighting unit.

"For lack of a better word, when he was appointed, all hell broke loose within the [Hawks]. I cannot describe it any other way," Booysen told inquiry chairperson, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on Friday.

He also told Zondo that the former Hawks head suspended him on a public holiday.

He said he received a phone call from his neighbour, who told him that "the riot police" were jumping over his fence at his house.

He said the police were there to serve him notice of the suspension and added that Ntlemeza did this to prove a point.

"If you go against me (Ntlemeza), this is what will happen," he testified.

When former Hawks boss Anwa Dramat was suspended, Ntlemeza was appointed to act in the position in December 2014.

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that Ntlemeza's appointment was unlawful and invalid.
