Although that has got to be the headline of the year :D:D:D ...

... it's a sad day when political BS gets in the way of improving the lives of those who most need the help and care the least about said political BS

Talk about a classic case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face :wtf:
THE Department of Health has put on hold its plan to introduce an Israeli-made circumcision device in the face of pressure from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and its affiliates.

More than a year after introducing PrePex, during the sixth South African AIDS Conference in Durban, the department was no closer to taking a decision on whether to use it, said spokesman Joe Maila, on Sunday.

Prepex, a nonsurgical circumcising device developed in Israel, was given the green light by the World Health Organisation last year.

At the time of its introduction, the department said PrePex was safe to use and could replace the controversial Malaysian-made TaraClamp device. Unlike TaraClamp, PrePex uses a ring design to remove the foreskin.

More than a year later, in the face of Cosatu threats that it would tell its members — many of whom are nurses — to refuse to use the device, the department is no closer to bringing it into use, although it denied on Sunday that the delay was because of pressure from Cosatu.
...
...National Education Health and Allied Workers Union spokesman Sizwe Pamla said on Sunday his union would not allow any Israeli product to be used in the public health system. "We have told the African National Congress and the government that our position is clear and unambiguous when it comes to Israel.

"We boycott everything and every product that comes from that pariah and apartheid state (of Israel)."
... linky

Seriously, just when I thought I had seen it all, someone goes and drops the bar to even lower levels of utter stupidity

10 out of 10 for the best headline of the year.
-infinity for putting principles before common sense.
I take they don't know how many products in use in South Africa was invented by Israeli's.
Cherry picking one that could save millions of lives is just... stupid.

But there is no good reason for circumcision in the first place.

The AIDS thing is but a mere paper value and even then it's not a cure...it just decreases risk. You shouldn't be pomping without a condom either way so whether you have a foreskin or not is inconsequential.

As for the cultural side of things...yes I guess if they are going to do it anyway then might as well help them out...but what are the chances they embrace a new method? Zero I would imagine.

It isn't the nose that's being cut off.

Whether we think circumcision is a good idea or not, there are still plenty people who are going to have their sons chopped. I reckon the vast majority of those will not be at dodgy circumcision schools out in the sticks somewhere
I for one am all for making the best tools ( :) ) available so that my little brothers who do get the chop, get it done in the safest and least intrusive manner
I would hazard a guess that the "cultural side of things" choppers are not even using the Taraclamp device , so doubtful that they are even the target market here

Also thought in this case it's not noses that's going to be cut off ..

Glad I'm not the one who has to live with a disfigured hack job penis for life due to political stupidity.
