Hi,

I am fairly new here, but hoping to get some help. So here goes.

Without going into much detail but my wife needs to setup a radiology reporting PC from home. The IT guy suggested we get a static IP which will make comms easier between host system and our workstation at home.

I will need a min ADSL speed of 4MB. Which ISP will be able to provide this. Is the cost going to be much more? Business rates? Is there anyway past this?

Thanks

Static IPs are expensive.
I'd suggest you take a look at getting a dynamic hostname (dyndns or similar) and see if that doesn't work for you.

Most ISP's will offer static IP's on their BUSINESS accounts
It WILL cost extra though

IF you are going this route make sure to get a decent router -- like a CISCO :)

ISP will probably provide as part of the business account.

DynDNS is for wimps
VDSL is for playboys

:D

Dynamic DNS do work most of the time.

If it is an option, take a shufty at most business ADSL account offerings, most of these have 5 static IP's.

Happy Camper, My wife is a radiologist and she wants to start reporting scans from home. So you will have a practice somewhere that will take the images(CT Scans etc) and need to send it to her desktop. Which according to the IT guy doing the setup needs a static IP address. He said if he wants to push images it needs to be static but she can pull images (which will be slower) and he can make it work with a dynamic IP for now.

This will be a trail basis to see if the remote reporting thing will work and therefore do not want to go out and get a expensive business account just yet.

Most of this is bordering on my limited IT networking knowledge.

It all depends what method is being used to connect the machines. If it is some proprietary software that only accepts an IP address then your IT guy may be correct although you could always just change the IP in the software before starting.

I wouldn't really be able to tell you for certain unless I knew how it worked or what software is involved.

why could she not just FTP into where the scans are stored and just pull what she needs, then so special setup on your end is needed???

Put the IT guy on the line ..........

I'd go with Spiderz suggestion, maybe Hummercellc's or try Google Docs...How big is the average CT scan? Or how big are the things you will move about and what are the time constrains?

If i were the IT guy from the radio dept I wouldn't recommend dropbox/google drive for this. Here we have confidential medical information that shouldn't go into the wrong hands (how many times has dropbox been hacked?).

The other thing is the speed. I suppose all these radio imaging are quite high resolution, right? A good connection will be necessary, ideally with good upload, as well.

I suggest you contact the guys from Kawuleza Connect and get a wireless simmetrical with a fixed public IP.

I tested one of their connections before and i was quite surprised with the speeds.

Ah, one more thing... You will require some kind of firewall in place. a public fixed ip is a high risk and you must know what ports to open and what to keep closed.
Most routers can create a some basic firewall rules and port forwarding to specific computers in your internal network. If you are familiar with this, great. Otherwise ask the IT from the radio dept.

you dont need a static IP address. not at all. dont waste the money

Dynamic DNS is the option, but it may be unnecessary. A dropbox or google drive account can be used to transact the information. It will be much more reliable than anything the IT guy will setup.

just make sure you use very strong passwords on the dropbox/google drive account.

Trying to quickly revive this thread.

Okay, so the software being used is Osirix-viewer on a Mac. As I understand dyndns won't work and also no dropbox, skydrive solution. The software connects straight to a PACS system (where all the high res images are stored). You can pull the images (without a static IP) but that means the image only downloads once you click on it. Images can be anything from 20MB to 60MB. Therefore there is a slight delay until you can carry on reporting on them.

With Static IP the images can be pushed in the background while you are reporting so your database is updated by the time you want to report on the next image. Therefor another solutions is not an option.

So my next question. What is the best/most affordable option for a (at least) 4mb line with a static IP. Cybersmart seams the best at R1745 a month with line rental included. Mweb is about R2259.

What someone else suggested is a line split. Have a 5Gb static ip address account with one router. Then another router with a normal uncapped account. Does anyone know if this is possible.

Thanks
