Some ISP's offer a form of dynamic DNS where they map an A record at the time of authentication from the radius server. It doesnt require any config and works more reliably than standard dyndns solutions.

Okay, so the software being used is Osirix-viewer on a Mac. As I understand dyndns won't work and also no dropbox,skydrive solution. The software connects straight to a PACS system (where all the high res images are stored). You can pull the images (without a static IP) but that means the image only downloads once you click on it. Images can be anything from 20MB to 60MB. Therefore there is a slight delay until you can carry on reporting on them.

With Static IP the images can be pushed in the background while you are reporting so your database is updated by the time you want to report on the next image. Therefor another solutions is not an option.

So my next question. What is the best/most affordable option for a (at least) 4mb line with a static IP. Cybersmart seams the best at R1745 a month with line rental included. Mweb is about R2259.

What someone else suggested is a line split. Have a 5Gb static ip address account with one router. Then another router with a normal uncapped account. Does anyone know if this is possible.

Your IT guy is a quack to be honest. Either he's talking through his rear, or the PACS software is crap. There is literally no difference between a dynamic IP or a static IP, a dynamic DNS service just resolves to your dynamic IP with a hostname that your specify.

just make sure you use very strong passwords on the dropbox/google drive account.

And don't use those services for any very sensitive commercial or other information: US authorities do not have to pass the same legal hurdles to access the contents of other countries' citizens' accounts on US-based cloud services, that they do for US citizens. See here and here and here.

A possible solution could be to setup a VPN connection that assigns a static IP on the company's internal network to your wife's PC at home once it's connected and then just push the images to that IP.

I think this is the case. It might even be the same practice management software as the company that supplies it runs about 56 practices across the country.

So the next questions is which is the best ISP to set this up with?

Register a domain say with imaginet and ask them to park it. Then create a free account at afraid.org. You receive a client to update dynamic ip every time it changes. This will cost you +- R140.00 the first year and +- R60.00 each year thereafter. You dont have to remember the ip address but always connect to your host with your domain name.

The only issue is your location as you will need line of sight to their point of connection.

That is probably for an uncapped account, hence the steep monthly fees. I do not know if you want uncapped though? The 5gb static IP option sounds better. Seems like mweb does offer something like that as mentioned by Prof.Merlin. Otherwise have a look at SAINET, they offer fixed ips for seemingly R150 + R99-299pm.

You can run more than one account on a router/pc. It all depends on what you want to do and how the setup at home looks like. It might also in the end depend on the ISP you go with as they will probably require you to run extra hardware at home to enable you to use static IPs.

I often need to access my SVN, SQL and reporting server at home.
I also put up initial demos on my home server for clients before moving to my hosted staging server.
To give access I have the usual DynDNS setup which my Kerio firewall automatically updates when the IP changes, and for the professional look/feel and setup a CNAME using my own domain that maps to the DynDNS address.

Been doing it like this for quite a few years already with zero issue or cost.
