Hello,

I'm new to ADSL... I'm a bit confused. I was always under the impression that ADSL had a dynamic IP address, unless you specifically ordered a static one. However, I seem to be keeping my IP address through disconnects and reconnects... is this normal or just a fluke?

I've noticed the same thing. Especially now that the 24-hour session disconnects are gone. I think 'they' just don't want you to count on always getting the same IP address, even though you may keep the same one for days (i.e. it's not guaranteed; it's completely random). Just guessing: maybe ISPs / Telkom save on computing resources by not explicitly changing the IP address assigned every time you re-synch.

Update: I just checked my usage, and I've had the same IP address for over 4 days :D

A good firewall is the most important thing to have. :)

Don't worry about your seemingly "static" IP - it will change, usually after a power failure, or when you switch your router off for 30 minutes and then on again.
