Quite newsworthy. ISP launched Vodacom 3G packages similar than CellC but digging a bit deeper reveals that they can also offer a static IP on this product. ( Once off R995 = 2Gb per month, every month for 12 months ... and the R1995 once off giving 5Gb/month for 12 months.)
Now I was wondering. what should be a fair price for the addition of a static IP on such a product? The ISP has not released the cost yet but it appears that it will be quite high. However, it will be worth a lot to those who need this, I think.
I also suspect that most 3G prospects would love to have the Vodacom network ?
Some thoughts?

I pay 50c per IP... wouldn't pay more than that from any other provider.

The problem is with static IPs you only really need it when moving big amounts of data.

Thanks for that. It is quite an eye opener to see what the ISP has to commit to for them to be able to have continuity ! The initial fee and annual renewal is certainly substantial. I suspect the ISP will have a good size investment in infrastructure and maintenance thereof as well. Its quite clear that the average man on the street can't really appreciate the hidden costs to provide such services.
tx again

Another thing... is this becoming a scarce resource ? and does that perhaps influence the retail cost? - Also wondering if the IPv6 implementation is a pain for the ISP in terms of setting it up on infrastructures before they make it available to the end user?

Oops, really wanted to reply to the post on ( Actually, you need static IP's if you want to present services to the world. )

SA based client had the key accountant moving to the Aus office and they have 2 or 3 local servers on site. They found that ADSL was down very often and had a 3G failover. The remote Aus guy had endless problems to access the servers by using DynDNS and they are a typical candidate for static public IP's. However, the only way to get it ( at that stage) was to subscribe to the IS uncapped and the cost was beyond what they could see fit to pay. ( not to mention the 3G fail over cost IS wanted ! )
They don't use more than about 8Gb per month and as such, the need for static IP's is not always for those who need big volumes.
