Static IP

Telkom doesn't reset their connections after 24 hours any more, and some ADSL users reported that their IPs stay the same...

So it doesn't mean anything really. Could be that you are the only one in your pool? Did you ask for your incoming ports to be opened up?

I don't think so chubster as i seem to have a static ip as well now. been connecting and disconnecting all day long with exactly the same ip being assigned. Besides i assume they would have to implement static ip's in order to open ports for us or we would have to request a port be opened every time we reconnect sooooo...

p.s. i have requested they open a specific port for me but as of yet they have not done so, hopefully soon though. Was really ticked to hear they were lying about the ports being closed as they kept telling me they were open.

The problem is we cannot do port forwarding on the device, that is the main concern, but this can be done with IP FORWARD Wizard..

I have also disconnected, reconnected to the network several times, have the same ip assigned... I also suspect that they've assigned a static ip to do port forwarding.....

Definitly not cool for lying about it :(
-1 for them

Usually on dhcp you can set the lease time, meaning that an IP will be assigned to the MAC address on normal ethernet. So my question would still be, if not set for open incoming ports, what would the lease time be. If your incoming ports aren't blocked anymore, then yes I would make sense to be assigned a static IP.

From what I can tell Neotel does not do any traffic shaping ie. prioritising of one or other protocol over another but for sure they definitely do traffic policing ie. blocking of certain incoming and outgoing ports.

As you will find some ports are blocked etc. As of yet my external VPN to my external customers abroad still does not work.

So! If someone is contracting and thinking of using NEotel's unlimited bandwidth to access a VPN externally; Cisco VPN's definitely blocked via Neotel. Works like a charm over ADSL and MTN.
