Sorry for the dumb question ... but this is what I have :

xbmc.jpg

Both machines are running Windows 7 and I didn't set anything up - it auto configured etc the Internet and network on both machines etc. All great!

Only problem is I control XBMC through my iPad and enter the IP of the computer. However it keeps changing ... so my iPad doesn't recognise it eventually and I need to repeat. I want to make a static IP.

When I click on Local Area Network, Properties for IP v4 and manually enter something in the IP and subnet mask (255.255.255.0) - the whole network stops working and the PCs don't see other.

Why? :/

You should assign a static IP for your computer in the router. Get the user manual for your router.

Rather use IP reservation in your router.

Basically you choose what PC to have what IP you want according to its MAC address, EG 192.168.0.2 -> (MAC adress)

... what did you insert into the default gateway part below?

7777.jpg

To find out what your IP, router IP and subnet mask is, you need to go to Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.4
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.2

I'll have to get the router manual ...

@id13 - I made the IP address 10.0.05 ... subnet mask 255.255.255.0 - and no default gateway. Regarding DNS, it's set 'use the following' but - um - yea there is nothing in there ;)

I'll check the other figures now

EDIT : ipconfig is giving me exactly what I've put in .... that 10.0.0.5 and the 255.255.255.0 with no default gateway

Put everything back to auto before you go to Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig

My bad ...

IP : 192.168.10.111
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway : 192.168.10.1

gateway : 192.168.10.1

Set your PC to
192.168.10.240
255.255.255.0
192.168.10.1
ip,subnet,gateway

Oddly assigned IP though. What router do you have?

It's a Trendnet something ...

Be back in a bit

It worked!

Thanks man - really appreciate! Makse no difference to me - but curious as to why that IP?
Or a technical reason?

What about the DNS setting at the bottom?

EDIT : May have chatted too soon. Just restarting

Leave the DNS as is.

Will explain my reasoning later, could you provide me with the model number of that router please?
