I have never cared much about MTN or any of the mobile operators. All I know is MTN is ridiculously expensive, had their fees upped this year etc, all due to the Nigerian bill.

But Im sure many of you have come across this
http://www.fin24.com/Tech/Opinion/dozens-of-fin24-users-hit-by-sim-swap-scam-20160303

And it seems it mostly occurs with MTN sim cards. There is reason to believe a lot of that fraud are inside jobs/information provided and hacked by the company.

I had my suspicion and was shocked when I received an alert telling me an unauthorized device tried to gain access to my email account. This is the first something like this ever happened. Google gives you the IP address, and blocks access(calling for a password change)

So I whosIP and https://dig.whois.com.au/ip/197.78.217.171
So I dont know if its from MTN directly, or someone using an mtn sim/internet access in that area, but I just wanted everyone to know to take precaution. I dont trust those *******s. I send an email to file a complaint but it returned because the "sender address was too full" LOL, I can imagine the monkey running that just doesnt care and lets it fill up without answering or doing anything.

tl.dr Mtn are suspicious *******s(not to mention with an overexpensive network and ****ty customer service). Use them at your risk. If anyone can help me with that IP address, figuring it out if its a person or from a data center etc, would be appreciated.

MTN is pure patheticness.
Just cancelled my R1000pm contract with them. Their system apparently allocates your airtime (without your permission) for reserved for data due to the syste, picking up your trends. Not 50% or 20% of your airtime. Everything. Had R220 and wanted to make an urgent call at 19:30. "You have insufficient airtime to make a call". Checked my balance and MTN allocated my entire airtime to data. At their own discretion. Asked them what if I was being hijacked and that one call could have saved my life before my throat being slit? Their answer "Our system is intelligent and will save you money". Save me money alright but not my life.

MTN is a disaster and very expensive!!! Stay away from that mess!

Recently tried CellC prepaid for reception. Surprisingly excellent compared to all the whines. Travel nationally and can tell you CellC reception was brilliant. Data and calling. Off course they require slightly better data reception in rural areas deep in the country (Colesburg etc).

But MTN is a no go! Unless you want their system to grab all your airtime and reserve it for data (which means making a call will not be possible).

You get inefficient companies, you get useless companies and then you get MTN. You decide.
